The ZTE Axon 40 Ultra has been launched and it's a solid smartphone with flagship components at a price that's more affordable than its competitors. The most notable feature about the ZTE Axon 40 Ultra is its great screen, unblemished by the typical hole punch or unsightly notch. While several other manufacturers make the same claim, ZTE is one of the few that can truly boast about offering a smartphone that is all-screen.

ZTE was the first brand in the world to cover the selfie punch-hole when it launched the Axon 20 in September 2020. A logical conclusion to the ever-shrinking, front-facing camera housing, the under-display selfie camera goes a step further than under-display fingerprint readers to actually see through the active pixels of the smartphone's display. Unfortunately, the technology was a bit too new and photo quality suffered, but there have been significant improvements in the last few years.

The ZTE Axon 40 Ultra comes in two configurations, one with 8GB RAM and 128GB of storage for $799, and a top-end variant with 12GB RAM and 256GB of storage for $899, both without a microSD card slot for storage expansion. ZTE is also offering $50 in savings when the Axon 40 Ultra is pre-ordered from its website. A token payment of $1.99 is required to secure a place in line and qualify for the discount, which lowers the total cost to $751 or $851, depending on the variant. The discount coupon will be valid for a period of two weeks. Pre-orders for ZTE's Axon 40 Ultra start on June 8, 2022, and end on June 21, 2022, which is when the Axon 40 Ultra will be released.

ZTE Axon 40 Ultra Under-Display Selfie Camera

ZTE continues to offer an under-display fingerprint reader with the latest model and there have been improvements in the technology. The 16MP front-facing camera is virtually invisible, appearing only when the screen is dimmed and studied carefully. However, the image quality from the selfie camera is one area where ZTE needs to improve further. There are three 64MP rear cameras – a primary wide-angle camera, an ultra-wide camera, and a periscope telephoto lens. There's a nice macro mode and an option for a full-manual mode in the camera app.

The 6.8-inch, 120Hz display is a brilliant AMOLED panel that is easy to see even outdoors and wraps around the sides in a waterfall design. The Axon 40 Ultra is a beautiful phone with a subtle glitter to the back's textured finish. With a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chipset, the Axon 40 Ultra offers flagship performance and its 5,000mAh battery lasts all day. The ZTE Axon 40 Ultra comes complete with a fast 65W charger that can top up the battery in minutes, a USB-C cable, and a clear, flexible case in the box to protect it.
