Emily Deschanel might no longer be the only member of her family that can boast about headlining a successful Fox TV show. The Bones star's sister and indie gal icon Zooey Deschanel is in negotiations to appear in the channel's currently untitled comedy pilot, which previously bore the less-consumer friendly name Chicks and D**ks.
The single camera sitcom was devised by No Strings Attached writer Liz Meriwether and could best be described as a more risque version of Friends that's part ensemble piece, but also a show that revolves primarily around an elementary school teacher with bad luck in the area of romance.
Deadline has confirmed that (500) Days of Summer's leading lady is negotiating to star in the series from Fempire member Meriwether, and would play said adolescent educator, Jessica, who decides to shake things up in the aftermath of her most recent break-up. That decision results in her moving into an apartment with 3 less than responsible fellows, and is the setup for a comedy that addresses the sexual politics of men and women in the 21st century.
Miss Deschanel is best known as the bright-eyed star of smaller-budgeted, quirker material like Almost Famous and this year's Sundance flick My Idiot Brother, but her resume also includes a handful of roles in mainstream fare like Elf or the upcoming period action-comedy Your Highness (and yes, we're intentionally ignoring The Happening). She had a brief stint on Showtime's Weeds and appeared opposite her sibling once on Bones, but the waters of television programming have otherwise not yet been tested by the female half of She & Him.
Obviously Meriwether's new show on Fox will lack the R-Rated tone of her Natalie Portman & Ashton Kutcher-starring No Strings Attached, but it still has the potential to be an edgy, clever take on modern-day romance and gender dynamics. There's also the possibility that it could turn out to be just another unmemorable sitcom, but having a charming actress like Deschanel in the lead certainly seems to be a move in the right direction.
Look for the show formerly known as Chicks and D**ks to gain a more PC title in the near future.
