This 2007 animated mockumentary tells the story of a surfing-obsessed penguin named Cody who leaves his Antarctic home for Pen Gu Island. Here he hopes to win the Big Z Memorial Surf Off. However, an encounter with his idol has him redefining the things that matter most to him in life.

While Shia LaBeouf plays the starring penguin and Jeff Bridges plays his hero, Zooey Deschanel takes on the role of Lani Aliikai. Lani is a Gentoo penguin who serves as Cody's love interest.

9 Mumford (6.8)

A teenage Deschanel took on a role in this 1999 comedy-drama about a psychologist who packs up and heads to a small town.

Though Dr. Mumford's therapy practices are strange, he manages to attract many patients. However, this has him facing criticism from the town's already established doctors, who end up hiring an attorney in an attempt to bring him down.

Loren Dean played the doctor and Deschanel played one of his patients, Nessa, a self-hating young woman obsessed with fashion magazines.

8 All The Real Girls (6.8)

This 2003 romantic drama tells the story of two boys who are longtime friends living in a small Southern town. The problem comes after one of these boys falls for someone he knows he shouldn't — his best friend's sister.

The starring bad boy was portrayed by Paul Schneider, while Zooey Deschanel took on the role of his naive love interest, Noel.

Though the movie failed at the box office, its raw performances were praised.

7 Yes Man (6.8)

Bank loan officer Carl Allen decides to stop saying "no" and start saying "yes" in this comedy film, loosely based on the book of the same name.

Jim Carrey plays the man who tries to break out of his negativity, and Zooey Deschanel plays the wild, free-spirited girl he falls for.

Though many critics accused the film of being too cheesy, audiences were able to appreciate the over-the-top humor.

6 Elf (6.9)

Buddy, a man who lives in the North Pole and has been raised by Santa's little helpers, has believed he's an elf his entire life. However, feeling that he doesn't belong, Buddy decides to venture to New York City in search of his father.

During this journey, Buddy meets and begins to fall for Jovie, a woman who is tired of her job at the Gimbels department store.

Will Ferrell stars as Buddy in this Christmas classic while Zooey Deschanel plays his sweet sidekick.

5 Bridge To Terabithia (7.1)

Two kids who go to school together (Josh Hutcherson and AnnaSophia Robb) end up befriending each other and dreaming up their own imaginary world known as Terabithia. Though everyday life is filled with struggles, the pair use Terabithia as a way to escape. The problem comes when tragedy strikes and rocks both the real and the fictional.

The indie film tells the story of Lyle (Gordon-Levitt), who is put in a juvenile mental institution instead of prison after beating up a teen with a baseball bat during a game. Here he meets a group of teens who also come from difficult backgrounds including a girl with low self-esteem known as Tracy (Deschanel).

Though the film's box office score was low, its admiration ranked high.

3 The Assassination Of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford (7.5)

Deschanel took on a minor role in this 2005 revisionist Western, in which an outlaw named Jesse James becomes targeted by his new recruits.

Brad Pitt played the titular Jesse. Casey Affleck, Sam Shepard, Jeremy Renner, Sam Rockwell, and Paul Schneider backed him up.

Deschanel plays a woman who Affleck's character hires for his nightclub, confides in, and falls for.

2 500 Days Of Summer (7.7)

While Joseph-Gordon Levitt plays a love-struck greeting card writer in this rom-com, Zooey Deschanel plays the office's newest assistant. It just so happens to be that she shares his very specific taste in music. Oh yeah, and she doesn't believe in love.

The sleeper hit received admiration for everything from its indie soundtrack to its nonlinear structure and compelling performances. The chemistry between the lead couple is also something worth talking about.

1 Almost Famous (7.9)

Based on the life of director Cameron Crowe, this film follows a fifteen-year-old boy who gets hired to write for Rolling Stone in the '70s. As it turns out, the rock 'n' roll life is filled with all sorts of shiny things that no one — especially not an innocent teenager — can ready themselves for.

Though Patrick Fugit stars as William Miller, Zooey Deschanel plays his older sister who's eager to fly the suburban nest. While she leaves her home to become a flight attendant early on, she eventually journeys back to her roots alongside her little brother.
