World War Z pits characters from wildly different backgrounds against hordes of zombie madness, and even gang members become critical allies as players scramble to push away the undead menace.

World War Z is an upcoming four-player co-operative shooter based on the 2013 movie adaptation of Max Brooks’ bestselling novel. The game draws inspiration from its source material, using different environments and survivor groups to tell a variety of stories. The game follows different teams as they move through apocalypse-ravaged representations of famous cities like Moscow and Tokyo, battling zombies while accomplishing mission objectives to survive.

World War Z features playable characters from all walks of life, including those who may have strolled down a darker path prior to the zombie outbreak. Angel is an ex-gangster who only really left that life behind because it evaporated along with most of society’s hierarchy in the wake of the undead’s emergence.

Angel grew up embracing the gangster lifestyle thanks to his father, who died while Angel was still young and left him with the skills and knowledge necessary to thrive in the criminal underworld. Angel credits his rough past as the key factor in his survival of the initial zombie outbreak, having both the weapons and wherewithal to get through the initial wave of panic and chaos. He looks like he’ll bring some much needed practicality and survival instinct to any group he’s a part of—not to mention his obvious penchant for firearms, which will inevitably help stymie the advance of any hungry undead.

While we’ve seen plenty of post-apocalyptic narratives before, a driving force behind World War Z appears to be its focus on humanity and how it adapts under the pressures of external hardship. It’s easy to look at a group of survivors and simply write them off as grizzled, hardened survivors who banded together to live, but with characters like Angel, players will instead get a glimpse at how morality shifts and bends under the weight of World War Z’s primary conceit. Angel might not be the most morally palatable character, but in a world that prioritizes survival, is that our problem or his?

World War Z is due to be released for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One on April 16, 2019. For more information, visit the official website: https://wwzgame.com/
