If Zombieland: Double Tap star Emma Stone has her way we’ll be seeing new Zombieland sequels every 10 years for the foreseeable future. The original Zombieland came out in 2009 and focused on a motley crew of zombie apocalypse survivors - Tallahassee (Woody Harrelson), Columbus (Jesse Eisenberg), Wichita (Emma Stone) and Little Rock (Abigail Breslin) - who form a somewhat dysfunctional makeshift family as they battle the living dead.

Though cast, crew and Zombieland’s many fans were game for a sequel from the get-go, it seemed less and less likely as the years went by. But now - a decade later - Zombieland: Double Tap is finally happening. Harrelson, Eisenberg, Stone and Breslin are all reprising their original Zombieland roles and Ruben Fleischer returns to direct the long-awaited sequel. Bill Murray is rumored to be making a return too and will be joined by a handful of new cast members including his Ghostbusters pal Dan Aykroyd, Luke Wilson and Rosario Dawson. Set in real-time, the sequel picks up 10 years after the events of the original Zombieland as the pseudo-family come up against evolved zombies, take up residence in the White House, meet new human survivors and fall out with each other.

If a Zombieland sequel can happen after all these years, it makes you wonder whether we might get a Zombieland 3 somewhere down the road too. According to Fleischer, a second sequel - and possibly more - isn’t totally beyond the realm of possibility as Stone is up for making Zombieland sequels a regular 10-year reunion gig. Speaking with EW, Fleischer had this to say about the possibility of future Zombieland installments:

“We have to see how this one’s received and if that’s something audiences would want. But I think we all had so much fun making this one, we’d be really lucky to get to return to Zombieland. Although, I will say, Emma said, she thought it would be fun if we did one of these every 10 years. Knowing that Woody’s just the healthiest guy there is, he’s going to outlive all of us, and so we can just keep doing them every 10 years, ‘til the end of time.”

That could mean a Zombieland 3 in 2029, another sequel in 2039, Zombieland 5 in 2049… and so on and so on if Harrelson really is as invincible as Fleischer seems to think. And although Harrelson, Eisenberg and Breslin have yet to voice their thoughts on the matter, Fleischer seems just as taken by the idea of making a sequel every decade as Stone is, adding:

“I can’t imagine a better way to look forward to my future than knowing that every 10 years I get to hang out with those guys and make a movie with them again.”

As Fleischer notes, the likelihood of any future Zombieland installments will depend on how well Zombieland: Double Tap is received when it’s released in October. Judging by the recently released Zombieland: Double Tap trailer, it’s got the potential to be just as brilliant as its predecessor. Fingers crossed Zombieland: Double Tap is good enough to earn itself a second sequel, even if it does take another 10 years for it to happen.
