Be one of the first to check out an exclusive clip from Zombieland: Double Tap. Double Tap, which was first released this past October, is a sequel to the highly successful Zombieland (2009). Zombieland is a comedy taking place in a zombie post-apocalypse, following the story of four survivors who end up becoming a family as they shoot and slash their way through the former United States. Double Tap continues to follow the story of these characters, with all the laughs, gore, and pop culture references from its predecessor. Zombieland was both critically and commercially successful, and has become ingrained in the collective pop culture zeitgeist. Zombieland starred Jesse Eisenberg, Emma Stone, Woody Harrelson, and Abigail Breslin. In the nearly 10 years since the original movie was released, all of these actors and actresses have gone on to huge projects and became household names. During that time, there were constant rumors about Zombieland being picked up for a sequel. There was even a Zombieland TV Series that was eventually dropped due to the poor response to the pilot episode. When the sequel finally arrived, it was met with positive reactions and the consensus seems to be that it was worth the wait.
In the exclusive clip from Zombieland: Double Tap, fans are given a behind the scenes look at two new characters that are introduced in the sequel: Albuquerque (Luke Wilson) and Flagstaff (Thomas Middleditch). The clip begins with Jesse Eisenberg talking about "the best sequence in the movie," when the two new characters first appear in the movie. The entrance is memorable because the newbies drive their monster truck right over Tallahassee's ride. In Zombieland: Double Tap, Tallahassee (Woody Harrelson) and Columbus (Jesse Eisenberg) meet Albuquerque and Flagstaff, characters who have eerily similar traits as the two protagonists. Albuquerque and Flagstaff are essentially doppelgangers of the main characters, and the interactions between the two sets of zombie apocalypse survivors are hilarious. Woody Harrelson, Luke Wilson, and Thomas Middleditch also provide their take on the scene.
The clip reveals that in addition to the comedic element this meeting brings, it also serves as an Easter egg. According to director Ruben Fleischer, Tallahassee and Columbus were originally named Albuquerque and Flagstaff in the early scripts for the original movie. However, because the movie was shot in Georgia, they decided to use more East Coast names for the characters instead. Albuquerque and Flagstaff were essentially unfinished draft versions of the two main characters. At the end of the clip, Middleditch jokes that "some are arguing that those are the cooler versions of those dudes."
Knowing this bit of information makes the whole scene even funnier than it already is. Does Tallahassee and Albuquerque’s disdain for each other in Double Tap count as self-loathing? Wilson and Harrelson bounce off each other very well, and their interactions were a delight to watch. It was a shame this didn't last longer, but a full movie together also wouldn't really have worked. This is the zombie apocalypse, after all.
