Zombie Captain America and the Winter Soldier reenact the shield throwing scene in a preview of Marvel's What If...? animated Disney+ series. When Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige unveiled the full Marvel Cinematic Universe Phase 4 slate at San Diego Comic-Con this summer, he also confirmed a number of television series in the works. Marvel Studios' very first live-action TV show, the Captain America spinoff The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, will hit Disney+ next year, followed by WandaVision, Loki and Hawkeye. Feige also revealed the studios' first animated TV show would be What If...?, narrated by Jeffrey Wright as The Watcher.
A.C. Bradley serves as showrunner on What If...?, with Bryan Andrews directing. The animated series will feature a number of MCU stars reprising their roles in a voice capacity to bring the alternate universe stories to life. Previously confirmed at D23 Expo 2019, some storylines What If...? will explore are Peggy Carter as Britain's Captain America, with Hayley Atwell returning, as well as Black Panther alter-ego T'Challa as Star-Lord from the Guardians of the Galaxy. As part of Marvel's Expanding the Universe special available on Disney+ at launch, the studio offered fans a preview of what's to come from their TV offerings, including What If...?
During the What If...? portion of Expanding the Universe, the special included concept art as well as clips of animation. Twitter user Balvin "PORTER" Bridges posted a GIF of a short animation sequence in which Bucky Barnes' Winter Soldier faces down zombie Captain America and the two recreate the shield-throwing scene from Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Check out the GIF in the tweet below.
The scene seems to take place on a train, so this particular segment of Marvel's What If...? TV show appears to be also referencing Captain America: The First Avenger. In that MCU film, Bucky Barnes fought alongside Captain America until he fell from a moving train and was presumed dead. It wasn't until the next film that Steve Rogers learned his best friend had survived and been brainwashed by Hydra to become the Winter Soldier. It seems What If...? will be putting a spin on that whole arc between Bucky and Steve, combining references to the first two Captain America movies in this particular sequence between zombie Captain America and Winter Soldier.
Although this brief animated scene is sure to get fans hyped for the show to hit Disney+, Marvel's What If...? doesn't release until 2021. So fans will have to wait more than a year until they can watch full episodes about Peggy Carter's super soldier, T'Challa's Star-Lord and find out what happens in the confrontation between Winter Soldier and zombie Captain America. Before then, though, there will be plenty of Marvel movies and TV shows to keep fans busy, including the first Marvel Disney+ series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, which premieres in Spring 2020. Then, fans will get to catch up with their favorite MCU actors when Marvel's What If...? releases in Summer 2021.
