The NBC series Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist often sees Zoey struggle with her superpower of being able to hear the inner feelings of other people through extravagant songs. Those abilities cause problems in her relationship with her friend and love interest Max. However, they get back together in the season 2 finale but with an added shock.

As Zoey confesses that she wants to be with Max, he hears her sing a "heart song." It's the iconic '80s hit "I Melt With You." The origin of Max's new powers is unclear but, there are a few theories that may explain this plot twist.

Zoey Opening Her Heart Gave Max His Powers

Max hugs Zoey as she sings about her feelings

Love may be the explanation behind Max's new powers. The entire season, Zoey fears being vulnerable with Max. She's afraid of losing him like she lost her father. But in the finale, Zoey takes a risk on love. The moment Zoey opens her heart to Max is the exact moment he gains the ability to hear her sing; that can't be a coincidence.

The show leaves viewers on a cliffhanger, so it's unknown whether or not Max can hear other's heart songs. Maybe, he can only hear Zoey sing because she trusts him completely.

Mitch Gifted Max And Zoey Their Powers

Mitch sings to Maggie

Zoey's father, Mitch, died in the season one finale. However, Zoey speaks to him in a dream at the end of season two. In the dream, Mitch alludes to being part of the universe. He also asks Zoey who she thinks she's yelling at about her powers when she looks up to the sky. The dream leads some fans to believe that Mitch is the one who gave Zoey and Max their powers.

Zoey told Mitch about how she wanted to fix things with Max so maybe Mitch decided to give Max powers as well. That way, they could better communicate with one another. This theory is by far the sweetest of them all.

The Universe Gave Max Powers To Restore Balance

Zoey thinks that the universe is to blame for her powers. The songs she hears disrupt both her life and her relationships. Zoey's unfair insight into Max causes tension between them. She always knows what he's feeling, whereas Max has no idea what's going on inside her head.

A theory amongst viewers is that Max's powers were given to him by the universe. It could be the universe's way of restoring proper balance in their relationship. Zoey tells Max that she doesn't know what the universe has in store for them, and she definitely wasn't expecting this.

Zoey Transferred Her Powers To Max

Max meets Zoey in the park

Zoey tells Max in the finale that she wants to be with him and right after, music begins to play. Max hears it, but Zoey doesn’t, as it’s her heart song.

Some viewers believe that Zoey accidentally transferred her abilities to Max. Maybe next season, the powers will go back and forth between the two of them. If Zoey is without her powers for a while, she may start to appreciate them more. Also, Max can better empathize with Zoey by sharing her powers.

The Powers Come From Max And Zoey's Shared Love Of Music

Zoey and Max sing to one another.

While Zoey doesn't know much about music, songs tend to show up during big moments of her life. An example of this is in the flashback episode when Zoey sees Mitch singing "Dream A Little Dream of Me" to Maggie after her heart attack. Music is important to Max as well. In the same episode, Max sings "Thinking Out Loud" at the SPRQ Point competition. Zoey and Max win by finding a code inside the song.

Music is something that connects Max and Zoey. It plays a significant part in both of their lives, so perhaps Max's new powers come from his love of both music and Zoey.

An X-Ray Machine At The Airport Created Max's Powers

Max sings 'Numb' to his father on Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist.

Max plans to move to New York with his girlfriend Rose. Audiences see him outside the airport when Zoey tries to stop him but he doesn't go and eventually finds Zoey at the park. However, fans wonder just how far Max got in the airport before turning back.

In the pilot, Zoey gets her powers during an earthquake while in an MRI machine. So, there's a possibility that the X-ray machines in airport security malfunctioned and gave Max his powers. While this is unlikely, it is a possibility.

Zoey's Powers Are Expanding To Others

Jane Levy in Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist

Zoey has been the only one in the series who has been able to hear people's feelings through song. But maybe, her powers can expand to others because they are getting stronger. It would make sense that Max, who's her best friend, would be the first person to receive her powers.

However, when a character begins to sing, would they both hear the same song? Or, could one of them hear something the other does not? Hopefully, there's a season three so fans can find out.
