Warning: SPOILERS below for Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist Season 1

Will Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist return for season 2, and if so, what will the show's story be about? Created by Austin Winsberg, Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist is an NBC musical comedy/drama that's also produced by Mandy Moore, who serves as the choreographer for the series' elaborate musical performances. Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist premiered in January 2020 and wrapped its 12-episode first season in May.

In Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist, brilliant computer programmer Zoey Clarke (Jane Levy) somehow gained the power to hear other people's innermost feelings and desires — but performed through pop songs and dance numbers that only she can see and hear. Zoey described her ability as "X-Men meets The Voice" and, thanks to her genderfluid next-door neighbor Mo (Alex Newell), Zoey realized that her mission is to figure out why each person is singing a "heart song" and how she can help them with their issues. Zoey juggled numerous problems in season 1, including being romantically torn between her best friend Max (Skylar Austin) and her crush Simon (John Clarence Stewart), as well as managing a rowdy team of coders at the tech company SPRQPoint.

However, no one was more important to Zoey than her father Mitch (Peter Gallagher), who was dying of Progressive Supranuclear Palsy throughout the season. Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist season 1 brought Mitch's story to its tragic but inevitable conclusion, but left the door wide open for Zoey's journey of heart songs to continue.

Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist Hasn't Been Renewed For Season 2

NBC has not (yet) renewed Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist for season 2. In speaking with EW, creator Austin Winsberg said he spoke to NBC executives by Zoom in late April and laid out the entire direction of Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist season 2. However, with productions halted due to the coronavirus pandemic, it's not clear what direction NBC will take in terms of its multiple live-action series and Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist has its own production challenges since it shoots in Vancouver (which doubles for San Francisco).

So, Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist is currently stuck in a holding pattern waiting for word on a renewal. Encouragingly, Winsberg cited that there is "so much love" from the President of NBC and other executives at the network for Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist so he's "cautiously optimistic" that season 2 will happen.

Who Will Be The Cast Of Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist Season 2

Mitch sings to Zoey

Almost the entire main cast of Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist is expected to return for season 2, which certainly includes its star Jane Levy. The actors who play her family, including Mary Steenburgen and Andrew Leeds, and Alex Newell, who plays Mo, are also expected to return for season 2. Zoey's two love interests, Skylar Austin as Max and John Clarence Stewart as Simon, will also continue their (inadvertently musical) pursuits of Zoey's heart. Lauren Graham, who plays Zoey's boss Joan, received a huge promotion to run SPRQPoint but she is also expected to return.

Sadly, the series bid farewell to Peter Gallagher as Mitch, who succumbed to his terminal PSP and died in the season 1 finale, "Zoey's Extraordinary Dad." But since Zoey's powers grant her a supernatural connection to her father, it's not out of the question that Mitch might cameo in season 2. Zak Orth, who played Mitch's caregiver Howie, however, is likely done with the series, as is India de Beaufort as Jessica, Simon's ex-fiancee. Also, fans can expect some new characters joining the series and singing their heart songs to Zoey in season 2.

What Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist's Season 2's Story Will Be About

Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist Zoey

The loss of Mitch is something the Clarke family — and Zoey herself — will be dealing with in Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist season 2. Since her father is such a fundamental part of Zoey's life, not having Mitch around will force Zoey to continue to ask the pivotal questions of what kind of person she wants to be. Naturally, tied into this is her love triangle with Max and Simon, and Zoey has undeniable connections to them both that will continue to complicate her life.

Meanwhile, Joan's promotion to running all of SPRQPoint could mean Zoey gets a new boss who she will directly answer to who may not be quite as supportive a friend as Joan turned out to be. Fans are also curious to know more about Zoey's powers and how or why she gained them so answers to those burning questions could also be on the way in Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist season 2.
