The fact that sequels to both last year's Star Trek reboot and the mega-hit Avatar are in the works was pretty much a no-brainer after both films were well-received critically and together grossed over $1 billion in the U.S. alone. For now, it's a question of when we'll see the sequels, not if.
Well, MTV News caught up with Zoe Saldana at WonderCon over the weekend and found out a little bit of information on the progress of both projects. According to Saldana, shooting on the Star Trek sequel will likely commence soon "from what I hear, unless [director J.J. Abrams], who's always full of surprises, is pulling us." It's nothing definite, but it supports Simon Pegg's recent comments that the crew of the Enterprise will be back in action soon, with pre-production possibly starting at the end of this year.
Saldana further speculated that Avatar 2 would likely be set in motion soon after Star Trek 2 wrapped things up. While the idea of a sequel to the 3D mega-blockbuster was essentially confirmed by James Cameron back in January (with a possible trilogy in the works), the project will certainly take a little while as Cameron keeps busy with other films.
Star Trek writers Robert Orci and Alex Kurtzman are already plugging away at the Star Trek 2 screenplay so expect to see Saldana back in uniform as Uhura before she dons a motion-capture suit again for her role as the blue-skinned alien, Neytiri.
For her part, Saldana sounds pleased enough to be returning to both franchises:
"The fact that I'm going to be able to get to play Uhura again and the fact that I'm going to be able to be Neytiri is wonderful because I haven't been able to part with them," she said. "And the fact that I'm going to be employed for a year and a half makes me feel really good because that means the rent is covered."
So which sequel are you folks currently looking forward to more? Star Trek 2? Avatar 2? Both?
Star Trek 2 is tentatively set for a June 29, 2012 release. No word yet on a potential date for Avatar 2.
