Zoe Saldana seems poised to inherit the mantle of "badass cinematic female" after her fanboy-friendly performances in Avatar, Star Trek, and The Losers. Now Heat Vision brings word that the actress is in early negotiations to star in mega-producer Luc Besson's newest project, Colombiana.
Spanning Latin America and the United States, the film follows "a young woman who, after witnessing her parents' murder as a child in Bogota, grows up to be a stone-cold assassin. She works for her uncle as a hitman by day, but her personal time is spent engaging in vigilante murders that she hopes will lead her to her ultimate target: the mobster responsible for her parents' death."
Olivier Megaton is set to direct. Though he has an awesome name, the only English-language film the director has under his belt is Transporter 3, clearly the worst of that trilogy and hopefully not an indicator of Colombiana's potential.
Interestingly enough, we seem to be going through a renaissance period of female assassin movies right now: Saoirse Ronan is starring in Joe Wright's Hanna, Chloe Moretz stole the show in Matthew Vaughn's Kick-Ass, and now Saldana might be the latest addition to this pantheon of action heroines. Luc Besson certainly has experience writing impressive female roles - after all, he's responsible for films like Leon: The Professional, The Fifth Element, and of course, La Femme Nikita.

Besson teamed with frequent collaborator Robert Mark Kamen to write the script, and the two definitely have a compatible writing style that has produced some of the coolest action movies of the past few years. Taken was a surprise hit in 2008, the first couple Transporter films were a lot of fun, and even the Salma Hayek-Penelope Cruz starrer Bandidas was a good time at the movies. Kamen also wrote the first three Karate Kid films, the first of which is getting the remake treatment courtesy of Sony and is set for a June 11th, 2010 release date.
Filming for Colombiana is set to begin later this summer, but there is no official release date set for the project. Are you excited to see Saldana return to another action movie, or would you rather see her step out of her comfort zone in a different genre? Leave your thoughts in the comment section.
