Actor Mark Ruffalo has reacted to the recent news about the real Zodiac Killer being identified. Ruffalo starred as Inspector David Toschi in David Fincher's 2007 film on the subject, Zodiac. The film co-starred Jake Gyllenhaal as cartoonist Robert Graysmith, who became obsessed with the case, and Robert Downey Jr., who played San Francisco Chronicle journalist Paul Avery. The film is often considered one of the better examination of the Zodiac Killer case, although it doesn't necessarily narrow down who the killer was.

This week, a team of about 40 different investigators working the case released the news that they found the actual Zodiac Killer, a man named Gary Francis Poste. Based on new forensic evidence, the group claimed that they had concrete proof that linked Poste to being the killer. However, the FBI and California police have stated that the case remains open, despite their claims, and that the evidence the group presented is purely "circumstantial." The new claims have stirred many to question the private investigation's findings, including at least one actor that may have some insight into the Zodiac killer case.

Ruffalo chimed in on Twitter about the news that the real Zodiac Killer has been caught, citing that he's "been down this road before," referring to his work in Fincher's film. "They made a movie about it," he said, referencing the film, and offers his feeling that maybe the latest suspect is correct, and maybe it's not. "Every few years someone says they figured it out. Let's hope they got the guy," he said. As the Zodiac film examines, there are many possibilities and overlapping evidence that creates more and more confusion and doubt on the many suspects that have popped up throughout the long, and seemingly still unsolved, mystery of who the real Zodiac Killer is.

Ruffalo has mostly appeared in his role as Bruce Banner/Hulk in a number of Marvel projects, including the Avengers films, What If...?, and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. The actor is currently shooting the Marvel/Disney+ series She-Hulk, in which he'll play the green goliath once again. The actor also recently appeared in the HBO mini-series I Know This Much Is True and will next be seen in The Adam Project with Ryan Reynolds. He's currently filming Poor Things, the next project from filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos, which co-stars Emma Stone and Willem Dafoe.

Mark Ruffalo may not be a criminal investigator, but as someone that who played the initial chief investigator of the case, he may have some insight into how complex the process really is. As new investigative techniques and forensic evidence come to light, cases like the Zodiac Killer have a good chance of finally being solved. However, the more time that evidence has to deteriorate and suspects and their victims pass away, it becomes more difficult to uncover the truth. Given that, Ruffalo casting both doubt and hope on the new findings is fitting, but perhaps these new revelations will lead to the absolute truth of the killer's identity. Until then, this likely won't be the last time these types of claims come up.
