Falcon & Winter Soldier: First Look Image Of Classic Zemo Costume

Baron Zemo in a mask and Captain America Civil War

Actor Daniel Brühl releases two images of himself as Baron Zemo in Marvel Studios' brief San Diego Comic-Con teaser footage for the upcoming Disney+ TV show The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Brühl originally joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2016's Captain America: Civil War, playing Helmut Zemo, a Colonel in the Sokovian Armed Forces whose family was killed during the events of Avengers: Age of Ultron. In Civil War, Zemo sets out to tear Earth's Mightiest Heroes apart by pitting Steve Rogers aka. Captain America (Chris Evans) against Tony Stark aka. Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) - and he was successful in doing so. In fact, one could argue that Zemo is the reason the Avengers lost to Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War, since they were split up at the time.

However fans of the Marvel Comics villain Baron Zemo took issue with the fact that Brühl's iteration didn't sport the classic costume, including the purple mask. Since Zemo didn't die at the end of Civil War, though, there was always a chance he could return in a future MCU project and become a fully realized version of the comic book antagonist. Now, after the Marvel Studios panel at SDCC this past weekend, Brühl is set to return as Zemo in the limited TV show The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, starring Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson aka. Captain America (formerly Falcon), and Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes aka. the Winter Soldier. For fans who weren't in attendance at the Marvel SDCC panel, they can get their first official look at Brühl as Zemo in the TV series.

On Instagram, Brühl posted two screenshots from The Falcon and the Winter Soldier teaser footage Marvel Studios played during their SDCC panel to announce the return of Zemo. In the first shot, Brühl appears as a bearded Zemo with a large overcoat. In the second image for The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Brühl dons Zemo's purple mask. Check out the images below.

To be clear, the Falcon and the Winter Soldier footage from SDCC likely won't actually appear in the TV show itself, since it was used to announce Zemo's return in the MCU, and may never be officially released online. Falcon and the Winter Soldier premieres Fall 2020 on Disney+ and hasn't begun filming yet so there isn't any real footage ready. However, the costume that Brühl wears in the SDCC video, mask included, is presumably what he'll wear in the series - or close to it, barring any minor tweaks. Although the image of Brühl's Zemo mask is quite dark and obscured by a video effect, it certainly gives fans an impression of what to expect from the live-action costume.

With Falcon and the Winter Soldier filming later this year, fans may get additional looks at the Zemo costume in unofficial set photos and/or videos. Further, Sam Wilson is expected to officially suit up as Captain America in the TV show, after Steve Rogers bequeathed his vibranium shield to his friend at the end of Avengers: Endgame. Recently, it was revealed that Mackie is being fitted for his Captain America costume now, so it will be ready in time for filming to start in October. It's unclear when fans will get their first look at the new Captain America suit, but for now, an image of Brühl's comics-accurate Baron Zemo costume for The Falcon and the Winter Soldier will have to do.
