Bottled items that players can carry around are practically a staple of Legend of Zelda games like Ocarina of Time, but some of the worst will be of little help. While some items like potions and fairies can be a literal lifesaver in Link's quest to free Zelda from the wicked grasp of Ganondorf, others can actually do harm if they're used. There are only four bottles total available in the game, so players should be careful of what they carry around with them.

In Zelda: Ocarina of Time, players can carry a few different kinds of potions that will restore their health and magic. If Link were lactose intolerant, Zelda games would be harder by a good margin given that healing milk is one of the more useful bottle items. Various wildlife like bugs and fish can also be stored in glass bottles, as well as incorporeal substances like spirits and mystical fire. These bottles are key to certain areas of the game, and are an extremely helpful feature in Ocarina of Time and other Zelda games.

Obtaining all four of Ocarina of Time's bottles means that players can carry four different items, some of which are invaluable when fighting Ganon or other bosses such as Twinrova. Fairies, for example, will automatically revive Link if he runs out of hearts during a battle. Valuable items that will increase the amount of Rupees he can carry at a time can only be found on certain enemies in Ocarina of Time, Gold Skulltulas, which require a bottled Bug to find. Others, on the other hand, are a bit too situational to carry around throughout the game, and are best left behind.

Not All Bottle Items Are Helpful In Zelda: Ocarina of Time

Catching fish has been a part of many Zelda games, but they're not the best things players can keep in bottles in Ocarina of Time. Aside from giving Lord Jabu-Jabu one to enter his stomach, their only use is to be sold for Rupees, and they don't have any use when fighting off the hostile creatures of Hyrule. Catching a big enough one will reward players with the Golden Scale, which will let Link dive deeper underwater, but the fish itself is still only as useful as the rest, and is best sold to the Buyer for 50 Rupees.

In one of Zelda: Ocarina of Time's difficult dungeons, the Ice Cavern, players need a certain item known as Blue Fire in order to progress. It's vital for the dungeon itself, but it has no other use outside of clearing away its Red Ice, so it has no real use outside of that single situation. It can't even be sold to shops, which means that after leaving the Ice Cavern, players are better off not taking any Blue Fire with them for the rest of Ocarina of Time.

Possibly the worst bottled item in Zelda: Ocarina of Time is the Poe Spirit. They can be obtained from defeating Poes and quickly snatching up the resulting soul when it drops, but it's better if players don't put this item in a bottle in Zelda: Ocarina of Time. They have a chance to either heal Link or deplete his hearts until he has less than one remaining when he drinks them, and when other healing items like Lon Lon Milk or the Red and Blue Potions are available, they're not worth the risk. They also only sell for 10 Rupees, so players are better off not bothering with them. Zelda: Ocarina of Time's Big Poe Spirits, however, are necessary for obtaining the fourth bottle, so they should take care to ensure they're not leaving those behind.
