Although it's not typically considered canon, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time manga does shed some interesting light on the fates of each of Link's and Zelda's parents. It explains what happened to their parents before the events of the game, as well as how this affects Link and Zelda later on, which fans should find interesting.

Manga and novel adaptations of video games and movies are always a tricky business. There are almost always inconsistencies, as is the case with the Ocarina of Time manga and game, but these ancillary texts allow characters and plot points to be explored more in-depth. The manga has even helped explain confusing plot holes in The Legend of Zelda. That's great news for longtime fans who want to dive back into the worlds they love so much.

Originally divided up into two volumes, the first part of the Ocarina of Time manga, written by Akira Himekawa, explores Link's saga as a child, while the second half focuses on the adult version of Link as he defeats Ganondorf and rids Hyrule of evil. Ocarina of Time was already a pretty tragic tale, and the manga makes the story even sadder, as it reveals what happened to Link's and Zelda's parents.

ocarina of time manga ganondorf kills the king

Early in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time manga, it's revealed Link's mother carried him to Kokiri Forest right before she died of wounds she received during Hyrule's civil war, to be raised by the Great Deku Tree. This was referenced in the game as well, but a bit later in the manga, readers learn Link's dad also perished during the uprising. Link's dad was a sworn guardian to the king and was killed just before Link's mother was wounded and escaped to Kokiri Forest.

In the video game version of Ocarina of Time, Zelda's parents are also gone. Zelda mentions her mother died shortly before the events of the game, but her father's fate is somewhat of a mystery. Link and Zelda spy on him through a window in the courtyard as he meets with Ganondorf, but the King of Hyrule is never actually on screen. However, in the manga, Ganondorf reveals he killed Zelda's father - probably moments before Link sees Zelda and Impa on horseback outside the city. All of this makes Ocarina of Time's story even more tragic, but it also provides some interesting details players may not have known if they'd only played the game.

Even though some fans may not consider the Ocarina of Time manga to be canon, it's great for providing extra backstory on plot points and characters the game didn't fully explore. Fans of The Legend of Zelda may definitely want to check it out, especially if Ocarina of Time is their favorite game in the series.
