As it turns out, players can break open the usually indestructible metal chests in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild by utilizing a glitch - but they can’t collect the rare items inside. Even nearly five years after it launched to near-universal acclaim on the Nintendo Switch, fans are still uncovering a wide variety of hidden tricks and secrets within Breath of the Wild’s vast open world, many of which were actually left in by the developers on purpose to add a sense of discovery for players.

Some of these exploits have allowed players to obtain The Legend of Zelda's legendary Master Sword earlier than usual by setting up a campfire and resting for the night or getting the drop on the thieving Yiga Clan by tricking one of its members into stealing priceless treasure from their own stronghold, while others are simply there for the bizarre sights they provide - like a horse mysteriously sinking into the ground or the dragon Farosh suddenly bending in an unusual way mid-flight. Others still can be used to uncover parts of Breath of the Wild that were never meant for players to interact with, such as the contents of the largely unbreakable metal treasure chests that Link can come across in his latest quest to save the kingdom of Hyrule from the forces of darkness.

A few days ago, the Gaming Reinvented YouTube channel posted a new video detailing how players can use a glitch to break open the normally invincible metal chests in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. As reported by Nintendo Life, this trick requires the use of the cannons located around BOTW’s Goron City and Death Mountain, but players can load one of Link’s bombs into said cannon, position any nearby metal chests into the path of the impending shot using BOTW's Magnesis Rune, and detonate the bomb to fire the cannon. This will destroy the chests and reveal any hidden items housed within them (including some rare clothing and key weapons), but since these objects were never designed to exist within the game world, Link can’t interact with them in any way. Furthermore, BOTW’s physics engine doesn’t affect these treasures, meaning that they will simply float above the ground in the general location their chest was opened in.

Fans will have plenty of time to uncover even more bizarre glitches and hidden secrets in The Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild, as the planned sequel has just been delayed until next year to allow the development team more time to polish the highly anticipated next chapter in Link and Zelda’s seemingly never-ending story. In the meantime, players have kept busy by pulling off impressive feats like using BOTW’s Bullet Time Bounce glitch to ascend to the skies above Hyrule and switch into a fun first-person view without the use of Link's new Master Cycle.

Strange discoveries like this have helped The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild become one of the most successful and well-received first-party Nintendo Switch titles in recent memory. BOTW gives players a further reason to jump back into the open world of Hyrule long after they have successfully vanquished Calamity Gannon. While the contents of the metal treasure chests were never meant to be seen or used by Breath of the Wild players, it’s still interesting to see just what was hiding within those metallic boxes.
