The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild gives players the ability to cook dishes like Monster Curry for stat effects, but players can now follow a Zelda recipe to cook and try the dish in real life. The intriguing purple meal has a variety of ingredients and a few steps for cooking. The final product will entice even the most casual Breath of the Wild fan.

To make the dish, players will need two large pans and 19 different ingredients. The recipe doesn't take too long to make, but there is a bit of multi-tasking involved to prepare everything together. There is also some prep work to be done with some of the ingredients like the chicken and potatoes; unfortunately, unlike Link, players can't simply throw their ingredients into a pot and get back a fully cooked meal.

In Breath of the Wild, Monster Curries can be cooked by combining Hylian Rice, Goron Spice, and Monster Extract in a cooking pot. The number of hearts that this dish heals Link for will change each time because cooking with Monster Extract makes the effect random. Any status effect added to the dish will also be random due to the monster parts. There are 10 different types of Monster Curry in Breath of the Wild that can be made by adding status effect ingredients:

  • Hearty Monster Curry: Link will heal and gain temporary hearts from hearty ingredients such as a Hearty Radish or Hearty Truffle.
  • Electro Monster Curry: Add electric ingredients like a Thunderwing Butterfly or Electric Darner to gain shock resistance.
  • Enduring Monster Curry: Use Endura Carrots or other endurance ingredients to overfill Link's Stamina wheel.
  • Tough Monster Curry: Increase Link's defense with a tough ingredient like a Fortified Pumpkin.
  • Spicy Monster Curry: Grants cold resistance by adding an ingredient such as Spicy Pepper.
  • Mighty Monster Curry: Add in Mighty Bananas to increase Link's attack power.
  • Energizing Monster Curry: Will refill part of Link's stamina wheel when energizing an ingredient such as Restless Cricket is added.
  • Hasty Monster Curry: Use hasty ingredients like Hot-Footed Frogs or Hightail Lizards to gain a movement speed boost.
  • Chilly Monster Curry: Add Cold Darners or Red Lizalfos Tails to gain heat resistance.
  • Sneaky Monster Curry: Will grant a stealth boost when sneaky ingredidents like a Blue Nightshade or a Silent Princess.

With each of Breath of the Wild's Monster Curries, the duration or strength of the effect will be random, so cooking the same dish several times can yield different results. If players are relying on this dish, then they should have a few iterations handy in case the effects are weak. While all of these curries are good to use for Link, players may be curious what this dish would taste like in real life.

Recently, ebuyer released a recipe for Breath of the Wild Monster Curry that is both intriguing and aesthetically strange. There are a fair amount of ingredients to buy, but some of them are common household items like flour or butter. This savory dish can be enjoyed any time of year, but the purple food dye used to give the dish its monster quality adds a spooky element that makes it a perfect meal to cook in the month of October.

How to Make the Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild's Monster Curry

Link Cooking In The Legend Of Zelda, Breath Of The Wild.

To start, anyone looking to cook Monster Curry will likely need to take a trip to the store. Fortunately, there aren't any ingredients need to be specially ordered and can be found at most local or chain grocery stores. Some of the items may already be around the house as well. The following ingredients are used to create Breath of the Wild's Monster Curry:

  • 4 Red beets, chopped into cubes
  • 3 Garlic cloves, chopped
  • 1 tsp of ginger purée
  • 1 tbsp of olive oil
  • 2 Chicken breasts, cut into chunks
  • 1 Large red onion, diced
  • 1 Whole star anise
  • 1 Cinnamon stick
  • 3 Red potatoes, peeled and chopped into small cubes
  • ¼ Purple cabbage, chopped
  • 2 tbsp of unsalted butter
  • 3 tbsp of plain flour
  • 300ml of chicken stock
  • 250ml of full-fat coconut milk
  • 3 tsp of mild curry powder
  • 1 tsp of garam masala
  • 1 tsp of ground coriander
  • 1 tsp of ground cumin
  • Purple food dye

This recipe uses its Breath of the Wild counterpart as inspiration for the dish. It should be noted that the chicken, beets, potatoes, cabbage, garlic cloves and onion need to be prepped and cut as indicated before cooking starts. The first step to preparing the curry is to get a large pan and put it over medium heat, then put in the butter and flour. The two ingredients combined will thicken, then add in the oil, garlic cloves, and red onion. Let them brown, and get another large pan for the next step.

Add salted water into the second pan using enough to cover the potato cubes, but bring it to a boil before adding in the potatoes. In the other pan with the now-browned onion, add the ginger purée, ground coriander, curry powder, garam masala, and ground cumin. Let it sizzle, then add in the cut up chicken and beetroot.

Wait two minutes before adding the chicken stock, coconut milk, star anise, and cinnamon stick. Cover the pan and bring the heat down to a simmer so the liquid can reduce. Players may now be reminded of Link's ingredients bouncing around and sizzling while cooking in Breath of the Wild. With everything boiling, keep an eye on the food and check the potatoes.

When the potatoes soften, drain them, then add them into the first pan to thicken the curry sauce. After 15 minutes, add in the red cabbage and a small amount of purple dye. Replace the lid and allow the dish to simmer for another 30 minutes. The sauce should be a deep, thick purple once it's done. The star anise and cinnamon stick need to be removed before serving. It's recommended that the Monster Curry be served with rice and garlic naan bread.

Creating this dish will further immerse fans into the world of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. While it may take players much more time to make than it does for Link, the result is worth the effort. Players can enjoy the Monster Curry as they traverse the vast land of Hyrule and complete some of Breath of the Wild's most difficult challenges.
