Magnesis is consistently helpful to Link throughout his travels in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild's open world, especially when it comes to exploration and combat, and a few players have found inventive - and perhaps unintended - ways to use this rune. It's another way that Breath of the Wild seems to allow for all kinds of player creativity, with more interesting tricks and ideas discovered by the community on a regular basis.

Link is rewarded for successfully solving the first few Ancient Shrines at the beginning of BOTW with four runes: Remote Bombs, Stasis, Cryonis, and Magnesis. All of these runes help Link more easily advance to new locations and battle enemies by manipulating elements or physics. The Magnesis rune is able to move any metallic object regardless of size, often helping Link find hidden treasures.

Breath of the Wild diverged from previous series entries in a variety of ways, but one concept that was kept consistent is the use of special tools to solve complex puzzles. Breath of the Wild provides Link with special runes from his Sheikah Slate to help him save Hyrule, including Magnesis, which can combine with other tools to do many things. These are some of the most clever Magnesis tricks discovered so far for Link to try in Breath of the Wild.

BOTW Tricks: Flying Using The Magnesis Rune

Breath of the Wild BOTW Flying With Magnesis Trick Link

Since Breath of the Wild’s release, players have found multiple ways to fly across Hyrule using the Magnesis rune. Perhaps one of the most innovative - and challenging - forms of air travel discovered so far is to fly via chained rocks, as used by Mety333. These metal rocks are most often used to solve BOTW Korok puzzles, but here they have been repurposed entirely. Link is able to stand on one rock while using Magnesis to lift the opposite one. From here, he can maneuver his Sheikah Slate to fly as high or as far as he would like. Link does have to be careful, though, as balancing on a round surface can be difficult and it is a long way down if he slips.

BOTW Tricks: Spinning Boomerang Weapon Using The Magnesis Rune

Breath of the Wild’s numerous melee weapons, bows, arrows, and shields create endless combinations to get Link out of any situation. One weapon, in particular, becomes even more lethal when paired with the Magnesis rune. Boomerangs are found in various chests throughout Hyrule or they can also be dropped by Lizalfos, one of BOTW’s many enemies. Once Link has found a metal boomerang, he can throw it and then catch it with Magnesis once it starts to return to him. It will continue to spin quickly when caught. This spinning boomerang weapon is incredibly dangerous in BOTW, even for distant targets as Link can easily control its path with the rune.

BOTW Tricks: Cart Racing Using The Magnesis Rune

The minecarts in Breath of the Wild are the key ingredient to several Magnesis tricks. Using minecarts and treasure chests to create a racecar-like vehicle as is one of the most innovative ideas so far. However, it does require some work on Link’s part. He will first need to use Magnesis to move the minecarts from the Gorons’ Death Mountain region to a more open area and locate a metallic treasure chest. Next, Link will use Magnesis to push the metal chest into one end of the cart, sending him soaring in that direction. This trick was also used by Mety333. Players’ ability to manipulate Magnesis and the other Sheikah Slate runes in unexpected ways is a great example of how The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild encourages experimentation to complete challenges.
