The sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild doesn't have an official release date (or even an official title) yet. However, a 2021 release date for what fans are calling Breath of the Wild 2 makes a whole lot of sense. There are plenty of reasons to think that Nintendo is planning the game for a 2021 release.

Rumors for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2 have been prevalent for a long time. Some people speculated it would release Holiday 2020, but that was before Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity's announcement. Now that Age of Calamity has released, everyone's attention is turning to what the newest Hyrule Warriors game means for Breath of the Wild 2. Plot points aside, Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity's release this year could mean Nintendo has something big planned for The Legend of Zelda series next year.

A 2021 release date for Breath of the Wild 2 seems obvious. After all, The Legend of Zelda will be celebrating its 35th Anniversary that year. Fans are expecting a number of re-releases and HD remasters for Zelda's 35th anniversary, much like Nintendo did for the 35th anniversary of Super Mario, but nothing has been officially confirmed yet. Since Age of Calamity released this year, it could be an indication that Nintendo is saving Breath of the Wild 2 for the 35th Anniversary celebrations.

Will Breath Of The Wild 2 Release For Zelda's 35th Anniversary

Although Nintendo may go the same route as they did with Super Mario's 35th anniversary and focus on HD remasters of past entries, there's precedence for Nintendo releasing new The Legend of Zelda content on the franchise's major anniversaries. Even the 30th anniversary of the series, which saw no new games, was celebrated with a lot of new amiibo, Skyward Sword coming to Virtual Console, and some major book releases honoring The Legend of Zelda's lore and history.

For The Legend of Zelda's 25th Anniversary in 2011, The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword released on Wii. It even came with an orchestral soundtrack CD. It makes a lot of sense that Nintendo would do something similar for The Legend of Zelda's 35th anniversary by releasing Breath of the Wild 2 in 2021. And while some fans think a Skyward Sword remaster is more likely for 2021, it's certainly possible both could release the same year. It's the 35th anniversary, after all, so Nintendo will want to celebrate in a big way. Super Mario's anniversary saw both Mario 35 and Super Mario 3D All-Stars, after all.

So far, nothing official has been revealed about Breath of the Wild 2 besides a teaser trailer. However, the game releasing in 2021 for The Legend of Zelda's 35th anniversary makes a lot of sense, and the timing would be absolutely perfect.
