A leak discovered on Twitter appears to reveal the name of Nintendo's much anticipated sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Nintendo has been promising fans of The Legend of Zelda franchise a follow up to its monumental Switch title, Breath of the Wild, for a while now. Nintendo confirmed that a sequel was in development all the way back in 2019, when it debuted a trailer at that year's E3 showcase.

With a much darker vibe to it, this teaser led many fans to believe that Nintendo were potentially heading down the same route that they took with 2000s The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask. Also a sequel to a more lighthearted Zelda game (The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time), Majora’s Mask is often referred to as the most macabre entry into the Zelda series. From moments such as protagonist Link painfully morphing into spirits of the deceased or the “happy” mask salesman’s meltdown, there are many creepy moments within the playthrough.

Fans have high hopes that this more sinister atmosphere will be continued with The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2 and now they may now have confirmation that the dark undertone picked up in E3’s teaser trailer was indeed correct. In a photo shared by the user tlspmoon on Twitter, a listing for October’s Nintendo Direct concludes with “The Legend of Zelda: Breath of Evil teaser trailer (2021)”. It has been a little while since fans last heard any thing about the sequel, so this tweet has certainly grabbed the attention of the gaming community. It adds another "Link" in the chain for Nintendo’s gaming empire.

However, followers remain unconvinced, branding the tweet as Click-Bait. Disputes for the leak’s legitimacy are rife. Many Twitter users have taken to dissecting the released ‘schedule’. Citing everything from the fact that it originated on 4chan to the wording of the so-called "Kirby Power Rumble" title, it is clear there is not much faith in the source among fans. Yet, while there may not be much faith, there is a lot hope for many. Next year, the Legend of Zelda franchise will be 35. The release of the sequel to its most groundbreaking game would surely be a fitting celebration. Until more is confirmed by Nintendo itself though, rumors and hope will have to do.

There is plenty to keep enthusiasts of the series entertained in the meantime. Gamers will still be able to get their Zelda fix with Nintendo’s latest game in the Zelda canon, Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, which is due to be released this November. Confirmed as a prequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, this entry into the beloved franchise will allow players to experience the calamity that Ganon wrought on Hyrule firsthand. More footage is expected to be revealed at the Tokyo Game Show this weekend. But who knows, maybe at October’s upcoming Nintendo Direct fans will be pleasantly surprised by an announcement about The Legend of Zelda: Breath of Evil. Only time will tell.
