Some of the plot threads in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild aren't fully resolved after players defeat Calamity Ganon, and the upcoming sequel, BOTW 2, has the opportunity to show what happened with them. BOTW is a massive game with many secrets that raise questions about its lore, history, and future. There are a lot of different interwoven stories that come along with them, and since it looks like BOTW 2 will be even bigger than the first game, there's plenty of room for it to close out some of BOTW's open-ended storylines.

The main plot of Breath of the Wild is the quest to slay Calamity Ganon, who caused the Great Calamity 100 years prior to the start of the game. Along the way, players will contend with the ancient and oftentimes hostile machinery that dots the land, such as the Guardians that Calamity Ganon took over before BOTW begins, as well as the shrines and Divine Beasts. Although most of Hyrule has long since recovered from the events of the past, Ganon's influence still exists in the form of Malice, a malignant ooze that will harm Link if he touches it. The game contains uncountable small details and lore hints that players can find on their journey to save Princess Zelda and end the threat of Calamity Ganon once and for all, and some of them have mysterious implications.

Breath of the Wild 2 has been highly anticipated for some time, due both to the success of BOTW and the trailers and teasers that have been released since its announcement. It looks like it will have new features and stories for players to enjoy, along with new exploration options, aerial environments, and possibly new weapons Link will use in BOTW 2. In addition to its new elements, it should offer explanations for some of the more mysterious portions of BOTW, and explore some of the things that aren't as prominently featured as they could have been.

BOTW 2 Can Explain Calamity Ganon And His Malice

Calamity Ganon is BOTW's primary antagonist, yet his origins are left largely shrouded in mystery. It's known that he destroyed Hyrule 10,000 years previously, prompting the creation of the Guardians and the Divine Beasts, but who he was and what his motivations are aren't fully revealed. Ganon has multiple incarnations across Legend of Zelda's branching timelines, and although they offer some insight, Breath of the Wild has worked to separate itself from them, and its version of Ganon appears to be distinct from the rest. Even if Breath of the Wild 2's villain isn't Ganon, it can still reveal some of his history and show who he was before he became the monstrous amalgamation that players fight in BOTW's final battle.

One aspect of Ganon, in particular, that BOTW 2 should explain is his Malice. Malice is well known as Ganon's corruptive power, but its exact nature and origin still haven't been fully revealed. In one of the trailers, Link and Zelda encounter a mummy surrounded by Malice, so it's seemingly confirmed to reappear in the next game. Breath of the Wild 2 should explain what precisely it is and where it came from, perhaps not in-depth, but enough that players at least understand how Ganon came to wield its power and use it to take over the various Guardians and Divine Beasts. BOTW 2 looks like it'll change Hyrule Castle somewhat and send it into the sky, and from the trailers and teasers released so far, Malice is at least partially responsible, so hopefully an explanation on it is coming.

BOTW 2 Should Show What Happened To The Yiga Clan

The Yiga Clan BOTW

The members of the Yiga Clan are a commonly-recurring enemy in BOTW. They're randomly encountered in the form of disguised Hyruleans that can be easily avoided simply by not talking to them, until Link sneaks into their base and defeats their leader, Kohga. After, the Yiga will randomly appear as players explore Hyrule, without their disguises, and immediately attack without warning or provocation. What happens to them after Ganon is defeated is never revealed, and since their entire purpose was to serve him, their next steps are uncertain. Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity revealed a bit more about them, but BOTW 2 should explore them further and show what became of them following the end of the first game.

Age of Calamity can give BOTW 2 a better way to use the Yiga Clan than as random encounters like they primarily were in BOTW. Sooga is Kohga's second-in-command in Age of Calamity, but doesn't appear in Breath of the Wild. What ultimately became of him in the main timeline hasn't been revealed, but since Kohga appears to perish, it's possible that Sooga will lead the clan - if he's still alive - and seek vengeance on Link, which could become a major storyline. It's possible that he was conceptualized after BOTW's development, so he may not be an unresolved plot thread exactly, but Breath of the Wild 2 should still include him so that it can show what became of him and the Yiga Clan in a time when he and Kohga did not join the Champions in defeating Calamity Ganon.

BOTW 2 Should Reveal What The Final Boss Room In Hyrule Castle Is For

Players can only kill time and ignore Ganon in BOTW for so long, and eventually must face off against him in Hyrule Castle. When they do, they find that he's become a monstrous chimera of Malice and Sheikah technology, and fight him in a mysterious room deep beneath the castle. What it is and what it's for isn't revealed, and hopefully it and the mural of Hyrule inside of it will be explained in BOTW 2. It clearly contains Sheikah architecture, but whether the castle or the Sheikah portions came first is uncertain. This could be where the technological parts of Ganon's body came from, which raises the question of what they were doing there and what the previous inhabitants of the castle were using them for.

The room looks like it could be a laboratory, or perhaps where King Rhoam and his researchers stored old Sheikah pieces before the Great Calamity. According to BOTW's lore, the Sheikah created the Guardians, which the Hyrule royal family studied extensively leading up to Ganon's rise. It makes sense that they would have Sheikah tech somewhere in the castle, but the purpose of the flooring and mural remains shrouded in mystery. It's possible that the room is connected to how the castle is floating in BOTW 2's trailer, and that it serves as a control center of some sorts. If so, it could also be how other locations are flying and therefore be a major part of Breath of the Wild 2's story. It's also possible that they're ancient ruins, perhaps ones connected to the tunnel system where Link and Zelda find the mummified figure and Link's new arm. Whatever the room's purpose, hopefully The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild's sequel will explain it fully and shed some light on one of the least-understood areas of the game.
