The evil Ganon/Ganondorf has always been a dark presence throughout the Legend Of Zelda series, and one fan thinks that he might be playable in the upcoming Breath Of The Wild sequel. While the fallen Gerudo leader and bearer of the mighty Triforce Of Power hasn’t appeared in every installment of Nintendo’s iconic dungeon-crawling RPG, he’s been a thorn in the side of Link and Zelda in many entries - either from the very beginning or as a hidden force manipulating another antagonist from the shadows.

It seems that the currently untitled sequel to The Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild will be no different, as eagle-eyed fans spotted a mummified corpse during the game's reveal at last week's Nintendo Direct at E3 – one that could very well be the Dark One himself. Ganon's last appearance was in Hyrule Warriors: Age Of Calamity, where he took on the terrifying new form of Calamity Ganon in yet another battle with Link in the game’s climax. However, in the next Legend Of Zelda, the longtime big bad of the franchise could be stepping into the spotlight as a playable character.

As reported by GamesRadar, Zelda fan and Kinda Funny writer Barrett Courtney has theorized that the forthcoming Breath Of The Wild sequel will feature Gannon as the primary character instead of Link and that the game will detail his journey toward becoming the villain fans know him as today. He points to a scene of the player character skydiving during last week's E3 trailer, citing that the character's face isn't visible and his right arm seems to be corrupted in some way - possibly by the dark magic that transformed Ganon into the fiend he is today. Courtney goes on to state that "this game will be learning about the fall of Ganondorf the man and then saving him from the evil that has been ruling over him for generations. And in doing so, we’ll break the cycle started by Demise.

Breath of the Wild 2 Ganondorf and Hand Shadow

Demise was the main antagonist in 2011’s The Legend Of Zelda: Skyward Sword, which is currently set to be re-released on the Nintendo Switch next month. Courtney says that this is no accident, believing that it was chosen over more popular entries like Twilight Princess, Ocarina of Time, and Wind Waker due to director Hidemaro Fujibayashi wanting players to get the full backstory before the next Zelda game is released. He also points to Nintendo not announcing the full title of Breath Of The Wild 2 due to it possibly spoiling the game’s story.

While Barrett Courtney’s theory surrounding Breath Of The Wild 2 is still just a fan’s speculation at this point, it would be interesting to play as Ganon during his days as a well-meaning hero who fell from grace, and the aspect of preventing his turn to the dark side could open the series up to some new story possibilities down the road. In any case, fans should stay tuned for more information on the still-untitled The Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild sequel to see if Courtney’s theory holds weight.
