Zack Snyder may be preparing for the release of his highly anticipated version of Justice League, but he has already hinted at a new project in his future: a movie based on the legends of King Arthur. While this concept is very much in its early stages, it still has potential to be one of Snyder's next big films.

Snyder has stated that he has no plans to make more movies within the DC Extended Universe and that Warner Bros. may not be interested in working with him on future DC films, which frees him up for other projects, including this King Arthur movie. There are many ways Snyder could approach this film: the stories of King Arthur are full of rich history and wild adventures, with many of the stories of Arthur's knights being more interesting than the tales containing Arthur himself.

The legend of King Arthur is one that has been adapted numerous times in all sorts of mediums, especially on-screen, and it's a tale that can go in any direction, which befits Snyder's storytelling style. The question is, will Snyder's King Arthur movie actually happen?

Will Snyder's King Arthur Movie Happen

It's highly likely that Snyder's take on King Arthur will happen, as Snyder is a well-known director who has produced several massive hits. However, there are no official contracts or announcements as of yet. Snyder also has other projects to finalize first; his next film after Justice League is the zombie heist movie Army of the Dead, set to release on Netflix in 2021. In 2018, Snyder announced he would be adapting Ayn Rand's novel The Fountainhead, a choice which stirred controversy due to Rand's political views. There have been few updates about this plan to adapt Rand's work, but as of 2019, Snyder was still developing the film. If the King Arthur movie will happen, it will happen after The Fountainhead, so it is likely still a few years off.

What Zack Snyder Has Said

Arthur wields the Excalibur in King Arthur Legend of the Sword

Snyder has not said much about the King Arthur film, stating in a video interview with Minutemen that he had "been thinking about some kind of retelling, like real sort of faithful retelling of that Arthurian mythological concept. We'll see. Maybe that will come at some point." Critics have already taken issue with Snyder's assertion that this would be a "faithful" retelling of the King Arthur mythos, seeing as there are centuries' worth of Arthurian legends, each with multiple iterations and differing origins. A faithful adaptation of any King Arthur story would be impossible, given that there is no one correct telling. Snyder has not said anything more about adapting King Arthur beyond this comment, seeing as he is still only thinking about the project.

What A Snyder King Arthur Movie Could Look Like

Spartans take defensive positioning in Zach Snyder's 300.

Snyder has a multitude of King Arthur legends to choose from should he move forward with this project. He could approach more well known stories, such as the legend of the sword in the stone or the quest for the Holy Grail, or he could delve deeper into the stranger parts of the Arthurian mythos to find something that has yet to be adapted to film. Whatever the film's content, it will certainly showcase Snyder's signature visual style and likely be closer in tone and scope to 300, his last foray into history and legend.
