Director Zack Snyder has explained the symbolism behind Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice's opening dream sequence. Batman V Superman was intended to kick off the DC Extended Universe with a bang by uniting two of the most iconic heroes in pop culture for the first time on the big screen, but while the movie was a commercial success, it met with a vocal backlash from critics and fans alike.

While some loved the movie and appreciated the tone Snyder was attempting to strike, the film was roundly bashed for its dour, humorless approach, Jesse Eisenberg's hammy performance, and the meandering pace of the story. The venomous reception the movie received took Warner Bros. by surprise and caused them to rethink their approach to future DC movies. This reportedly led to Zack Snyder being removed from Justice League during production, before Joss Whedon was recruited to reshape the project via reshoots.

In recent times, Snyder has been busy on social media network Vero (via Cinema Blend), engaging with fans and posting photos of deleted scenes from his cut of Justice League. Now the director has been talking about the opening scene of Batman V Superman, where young Bruce Wayne dreams of being lifted from the darkness into the light by a swarm of bats, and has explained the meaning of Bruce's "Beautiful Lie" line:

While some fans didn't take to Snyder's dark take on the franchise before his rumored firing, it can't be denied he had a vision for DC's film. The director has been accused of favoring visuals over story in the past, such as the imagery of Bruce being lifted by bats, but his statement on the scene shows he had a clear subtext in mind. One major issue of the theatrical cut of Justice League is that it lacked any unifying theme and was just an awkward mash-up between the very different styles of Snyder and Whedon.

Snyder's increased activity on social media and the sharing of deleted scene images has only fanned the flames for his cut of Justice League. There are differing reports on how complete his edit was before he left the project, with some claiming it was quite far along. That said, there are also reports his version was near unwatchable, which is the true reason Warner Bros went with another director.

Despite high fan demand and some fans abiding love for Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice, it seems unlikely the studio would be willing to pay for the costs of finishing effects work and post-production on the fabled Snyder Cut. The film should have been a big success but is currently the lowest-grossing DCEU movie, so the studio will likely want to move focus away from all things Justice League for the foreseeable future.
