Dave Bautista might be hinting at a role in Zack Snyder’s Netflix zombie epic Army Of The Dead. Given their popularity now, it's hard to envision a time when zombies weren’t in vogue. That said, there was a noticeable dearth of zombie movies from the 1990s to the early 2000s, when the genre got a shot in the arms due to 28 Days Later and Resident Evil in 2002. Zack Snyder made his directorial debut with 2004’s Dawn Of The Dead, which took the basic premise of George Romero’s 1978 original and turbocharged it into a relentless action movie.

Dawn Of The Dead proved slightly controversial among zombie purists, including George Romero himself, with its depiction of fast-moving undead, but the film was a big success. The movie ends on something of a cliffhanger so it was expected Snyder would return for a sequel. While a remake of Day Of The Dead arrived in 2008 – and confusingly starred Dawn’s lead Ving Rhames – it had nothing to with Snyder or his 2004 movie. It was later announced Snyder was producing a crazy zombie movie dubbed Army Of The Dead, with Matthijs van Heijningen Jr – director of The Thing prequel – set to direct.

This version of Army Of The Dead was eventually canceled due to the financial crisis, but it was recently confirmed the project was being resurrected by Zack Snyder at Netflix. The movie is set to arrive in 2020, but while no actors have been officially cast yet, one star appears to be teasing their involvement. In a recent profile over at the Tampa Bay News, Dave Bautista (Avengers: Endgame) mentions his involvement with an upcoming Snyder project. While Army Of The Dead isn’t specifically mentioned, that does appear to be the only Snyder movie in active development.

Army Of The Dead is set in a walled-off Las Vegas following a zombie outbreak, with the story following a team of mercenaries who enter the city to pull off a heist. It’s not hard to picture Bautista as one of the crew, but for now, his involvement with the project is far from confirmed. The actor has proved to be quite prolific outside of the MCU in recent years, jumping from varied roles in Blade Runner 2049, Bushwick and Escape Plan 2: Hades.

Some critics still consider Dawn Of The Dead to be Snyder’s best work, and it will be fun to see him return to his roots. That being said, the movie is said to have a budget of $90 million so the scale should be a significant increase from Dawn. It was also confirmed Army Of The Dead has dropped a controversial plot element from the original 2008 draft, where zombies assaulted human females, who then gave birth to zombie hybrids.
