UPDATE: Discussing Film has since removed their post.
Zack Snyder has denied that Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice cinematographer Larry Fong has joined the crew of his forthcoming Netflix zombie film Army of the Dead. Snyder confirmed back in January that the movie - described by the director as a “balls-to-the-wall zombie freakshow” - would be his next project. Based on an earlier project of Snyder’s that never got off the ground, Army of the Dead is set during a zombie outbreak and stars Guardians of the Galaxy's Dave Bautista as the leader of a group of mercenaries trying to pull off a heist in a quarantined and zombie-infected Las Vegas.
Over the past few months, Snyder has been steadily padding out Army of the Dead’s cast with the recent addition of Ella Purnell (Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children), alongside other actors including Theo Rossi (Luke Cage) and Ana de la Reguera (Twin Peaks). He’s also been adding key members of the crew from Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice to his Army of Dead team, including stunt coordinator Damon Caro and costume designer Stephanie Portnoy Porter.
According to Discussing Film, cinematographer Larry Fong had also joined the crew of Army of the Dead, which certainly made sense considering how many other Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice crew members are already on board. Unfortunately, Snyder himself debunked this on Vero when responding to a post about the news, saying: “Not true love him but not true”. Check out the post below:
Snyder is known for his frequent collaborations with familiar crew members. He’s worked with film editor William Hoy on several movies, including 300 and Sucker Punch, and with visual effects expert John "D.J." Desjardin on films like Man of Steel and Justice League. Alongside Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Larry Fong has collaborated with Snyder in the past on 300, Sucker Punch, and Watchmen, while his most recent feature films were Kong: Skull Island and The Predator.
As for who Snyder might hire rather than Fong? He’s worked with other cinematographers, including Fabian Wagner on Justice League, Amir Mokri on Man of Steel, and with Matthew F. Leonetti on his Dawn of the Dead remake - the last time he dipped his toes into the zombie genre. Perhaps Army of the Dead’s cinematographer will be somebody else he’s worked with in the past or maybe he’ll go with someone entirely new, but for now, only time will tell.
