Zachary Quinto To Star In Spielberg's Gershwin Biopic?

There have been a few projects that Steven Spielberg could choose as his next film ever since he dropped out of the Harvey remake. Now we hear that it could be a biopic about George Gershwin, which Dreamworks (the studio where Spielberg resides) acquired last year. And we also get word that Zachary Quinto might be playing the late composer and pianist.

Deadline Hollywood reports the news that Spock/Sylar ("Spylar") will play Gershwin in the untitled biopic (we're simply referring to it as George Gershwin until we hear otherwise). Gershwin was a composer and pianist who, with his brother Ira, was responsible for a dozen Broadway plays before he died at the young age of 38 in 1937. His music spanned all sorts of genres and even today you should at least recognize his most famous pieces (such as "Rhapsody in Blue").

Dreamworks is reportedly supplying a voice coach for Quinto to help with the accent and dialogue (Gershwin was born in Brooklyn with both his parents immigrating from Russia). Star Trek 2 is set for a release in the summer of 2012, so there's time before they need to start shooting and Quinto can easily fit in this Gershwin project (if Heroes comes back for another season that won't shoot again for a while either). Shooting on Gershwin could begin as early as this April.

Doug Wright (Quills) has written the script and both Marc Platt (Wanted) and singer/pianist Michael Feinstein are producing. It isn't yet confirmed that this is Spielberg's next directing project, as it's reportedly only one of three he's looking at (along with The 39 Clues and his long-gestating Lincoln biopic). Deadline Hollywood says we should keep an eye out later this week for an announcement of what will be Spielberg's pick of the three and I'd say there's a good chance it will be this Gershwin biopic.

I'll certainly be interested to see Quinto star in a role like this, particularly when we've mostly seen him in the geeky spotlight as the villain Sylar in Heroes (one of the few truly great things about that show anymore) and as Spock in J.J. Abrams Star Trek reboot. Admittedly he's not the first person I'd think of to play Gershwin but he's a talented actor so I'm willing to bet he'll make it work.

Do you think Quinto is the right actor to portray Gershwin in a biopic? Would you like it to be Spielberg's next project?

As stated, George Gershwin could start shooting as early as this April. Stay tuned for more details, including a release date, as it gets announced.
