Amazon's The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is about to get even more marvelous as Shazam! star Zachary Levi will join the cast of the Amazon original series for its second season.
In The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Rachel Brosnahan stars as Miriam "Midge" Maisel, a young housewife who discovers that her husband, a wanna-be stand-up comedian, has plans to leave her for his secretary. This prompts Midge to inadvertently create her own stand-up comedy routine where she rants and raves about her life on stage. When it turns out that she's actually really funny, she gets a manager in Alex Borstein's Susan Myerson and a regular gig at a comedy nightclub. The first season of the critically acclaimed series earned it two Golden Globe awards, including a Best Actress award for Musical or Comedy for Brosnahan, along with other nominations and awards.
THR reported that the second season of the series will add Levi as a recurring character on the show as an "eclectic Manhattan doctor who suddenly starts orbiting the Weissman/Maisel world." However, other details about the character Levi will portray are being currently kept secret.
Although the second season of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel doesn't have a release date yet, Amazon recently announced that it has picked up the show for a third season. The first season only comprised a total of eight episodes, but the second season will boast ten. Amazon is on a roll with its original series, trying to step up to the plate to compete with the likes of Hulu and Amazon. Not only does Amazon have fan and critic favorites such as The Man In The High Castle and Transparent, but it is also likely to pick up sci-fi drama The Expanse after its cancellation on Syfy. Amazon wants to position itself as more than a place to buy anything your heart desires. The company also wants Prime subscribers to enjoy original content that cannot be found anywhere else.
Although Levi is mostly known for his work on Chuck, he'll become a bigger star next year with the release of the superhero jaunt Shazam! In that film, Levi takes on the role of Captain Marvel (the DC Comics version), with Asher Angel playing his young alter-ego Billy Batson. Levi is certainly a big addition to The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel cast and with his star on the rise, it's likely Amazon might capture a few more Prime subscribers with this announcement.
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel will return for season 2 on Amazon Prime.
