Syfy renews Z Nation for season 5. Ever since The Walking Dead first aired on Halloween Night in 2010, zombies have come to dominate the landscape of the horror genre. Be it in literature - such as Michael Logan's Apocalypse Cow and Peter Clines' Ex-Heroes series - or on the big screen, as in the movies World War Z and Warm Bodies, the shambling undead have never been more prominent in the pop culture zeitgeist.

Z Nation is one of the many zombie-themed series to make its way onto cable television, hoping to win some of the same attention and acclaim as The Walking Dead. The first television series produced by The Asylum - the production company behind the Sharknado movies and over 250 other "mockbuster" films - the series recently concluded its fourth season with a two-hour special.

An announcement on the Twitter feed of The Asylum's CEO David Michael Latt confirmed that the Syfy network has renewed Z Nation for a 5th season. Though mum on the details of exactly what fans could expect, Latt said that the new series will air sometime in 2018.

Set thee years into a post-apocalyptic future where the collapse of American society was triggered by the release of a man-made virus that transformed the infected into zombies, Z Nation follows the adventures and misadventures of one band of survivors who seek a cure for the plague that destroyed their world. The key to their mission is Alvin Murphy (Keith Allan) - a former prisoner the group seeks to escort from New York to the last known operational Center For Disease Control laboratory in California.

Part of an experiment in the final days before the government's collapse to find a vaccine for the zombie-making virus, Murphy's blood contains antibodies capable of fighting the zombie virus. Despite his apparent good health, Murphy has come to resemble a zombie even though he retains full control of his faculties. He also possesses some kind of power that allows him to control zombies as well as any normal human that he bites.

Z Nation also stars Kellita Smith as Lt. Roberta Warren, DJ Qualls as Simon "Citizen Z" Cruller, Anastasia Baranova as Addison Grace "Addy" Carver, Russell Hodgkinson as Steven "Doc" Beck, Nat Zang as Tomas "10K", Sydney Viengluang as Sun Mei, Ramona Young as Kaya, Natalie Jongjaroenlarp as Red, Holden Goyette as "Nature Boy"/5K, Gracie Gillam as Sgt. Lilley and Henry Rollins as Lt. Mueller.
