Warning - spoilers for the first episodes of Younger's final season.

Younger is back for a final season, and of course, every fan is wondering if Liza will end up with Charles, or with Josh - and the first four episodes released have blown that question wide open, with Charles and Liza breaking up. Now, there are unlimited possibilities for the central love triangle of the show, and fans cannot wait to see who (if anyone) wins the day.

Of course, there is so much more to this hit show than just the Liza/Charles/Josh drama, or even the original premise of Liza faking it as a much younger woman (which has now essentially been resolved, with everyone aware and over it). All of the characters bring something special to Younger, but not all of them are particularly likable. Which are the best of the show, though, and which are the villains... or just the uninteresting characters?

Quinn

Quinn is, by far, the worst major character on the show - and yet, it looks like she is going to be a major player for the rest of season 7. First appearing as an author and investor, Quinn was revealed to be a selfish woman, motivated entirely by money and success, and willing to step on anyone to get it.

In this season so far, it seems like she has started to change (and that her experience of public failure in running for office may have humbled her a little bit), but she's still vicious with Liza, and proves that she is willing to fight dirty to get to the top. She's not just the worst character because she is unlikable, though, but because she is unbelievable. It's hard to have real faith that a woman so two-dimensionally awful would exist, let alone get the chances that she does in the show.

Caitlin

Liza and Caitlin on Younger

Caitlin, Liza's daughter, has a lot of potential - but she's not a great character purely because she is underused. She's not the focus of the series, after all, her mother is, and Younger isn't attempting to be Gilmore Girls. Because of this, Caitlin only really shows up from time to time, and then only when necessary to forward the plot. This was especially obvious in the earlier seasons, where she was still a secret (and when Liza was keeping her new life a secret from Caitlin, too). Now, she's almost a background character, and as such, not one of the best.

Lauren

Lauren is definitely a likable character, as there is something charming about her completely over-the-top confidence. And of course, at the end of the day she has a huge heart, and is incredibly caring about her friends. It's this that stops her self-esteem from becoming abrasive, and keeps her a lovable member of the core crew. However, in terms of the show as a whole, she is somewhat unbelievable. She is so over the top that it feels cartoonish at times, and she seems to suffer zero consequences for her actions, no matter how wild they may be. In the final season so far, she has also somehow just been... handed... a spot at Empirical, which feels a little like a lazy way to write her in to the main action.

Diana

Diana may start out as a too-strict boss, and the kind of woman that it is difficult to really warm to, but over the course of the show she becomes one of the most beloved characters in the series. Her defensiveness is revealed to be a complicated response to her loneliness, and she is an interesting character for her focus on herself, her career, and her refusal to settle - and her incredible style.

However, at times this can feel like a bit of a predictable arc, and the idea of a stone-cold career woman who finds love in an unexpected way borders on cliche. She is also yet to appear in the final season, and will not be returning as a regular, only a recurring character, which is a shame (especially as it may well mean her story is written to end with her marriage meaning that her career is dropped, which would make no sense for the character).

Zane

younger zane kelsey

Zane isn't one of the main characters from the start, as he joins the show in season 4. He quickly becomes a regular, as a romantic interest for Kelsey, but also as professional competition. However, it's hard to really love him, because while he has his softer moments, his competitive side (and the way he smirks and boasts about winning) are incredibly offputting.

At times, it's difficult to understand why he and Kesley have any kind of romance, as they are often outright mean to each other. It's good to get a connection to a character in the publishing world who does not always work for Empirical, though, and he does have some amazing moments along the way. However, like Diana, he will not be a recurring character in the final season, so it's hard to consider someone who is really only around for a couple of seasons of the show to be one of the absolute best.

Charles

Younger-Charles and Radha

As the big boss at Empirical, Charles is a powerful man - and sometimes, he feels like a caricature of the powerful-boss-in-a-suit. Thankfully, he becomes more complex as the series continues, and he is definitely one of the easiest characters to like (he's a clear hero, a great dad, a good boss, and willing to sacrifice all kinds of things for love).

He's also charming, and his love story with Liza is sweet and believable, as are his reactions to her secret. If there's an issue with Charles, it's that he's often not enough of a focus, and that at times, he seems a little too good to be true.

Kelsey

In many ways, Kelsey is one of the most likable characters in Younger - but that doesn't mean that she is the best in every other way. A young woman who is determined to make a name for herself in her industry, Kelsey is a powerhouse, and is not just talented and driven, but kind, too. She takes Liza under her wing when she first starts at Empirical, and she is incredibly good to her friends throughout the show.

However, she also seems to consistently make ridiculous mistakes, and they often verge on the less-than-believable. Fans are also hoping that her drinking may be addressed in the final season, as it seems to consistently get in the way of her success and cause her issues (not just the 'money, honey' video, either), but it's not clear if this is written as just 'the way millennials drink', or if there is a build-up to a serious tackling of the subject. At the moment, Kelsey seems to be floundering a bit, so it will also be interesting to see how the show wraps this story up.

Liza

Younger- Liza’s 10 Best Outfits Heading Cropped

Liza may be the main character of the entire series, but she's not quite the 'best'. She's definitely likable, and the sheer amount of effort that she puts in is enough to make anyone warm to her. She really does try, and the initial issue that she faces (of not being able to get work at her age), and her struggles to keep her secret (until it all comes out) are surprisingly relatable - even if few fans are in this exact scenario.

Despite this, her character definitely veers between relatable and ridiculously unbelievable, especially when it comes to how 'out of touch' she is. Liza is supposed to be only forty at the start of the show, and she has a daughter about to go to college, so presumably, she would have some concept of social media and what a meme is - if only through Caitlin. Yet she's completely clueless, and this often leads to fans wincing at unbelievable naivety. She can also be frustrating, as a character, making terrible choices - like telling a relative stranger, who is a struggling writer looking for a story, her deep dark secret on a first date.

Maggie

Maggie at coffee shop Younger

Maggie is clearly a fan-favorite, but she's more than just a whole lot of fun to watch. Liza's best friend, she's possibly the person in the series who most has her life together, as a successful artist who is perfectly happy with where she is in life. And while she does have her own romantic adventures too, she's happy to be single unless the perfect person comes along, which is refreshing to see in this genre. She's talented, smart-mouthed, capable, cheerful, able to twist any situation to her liking, sexy, adventurous, and manages to be both incredibly loving and the kind of woman who carries a switchblade at the same time. The only possible issue with Maggie is that she just doesn't get enough screentime.

Josh

josh younger

Josh is easily the best, and least problematic, character in the entire series. When Liza first meets him, he seems to be just a bit of a himbo - gorgeous, not too intellectual (she's appalled that he's not a big reader), and lots of fun. But over the course of the show, he has been proven to be so much more than that. He's loving, honest, hardworking, creative, talented, and romantic. He's capable of having a healthy relationship, of giving people second chances, and of remaining close friends with his ex, and to top it all off, he's now proving himself to be a devoted and caring father. And yet somehow, he's not so perfect that it's unbelievable, and his flaws are relatable, too. In short, Josh often carries the show, and whether he ends up with Liza or not, he's the real star of Younger.
