In a major show of confidence, CBS has renewed Young Sheldon for 3 additional seasons, thus allowing the series to make it to season 7. In 2017, CBS created Young Sheldon with the hopes of building upon the success of their beloved nerd-friendly sitcom The Big Bang TheoryThe spin-off explores the childhood of Jim Parsons' character Sheldon Cooper, a child prodigy who shines bright in his small Texas town. Iain Armitage plays Sheldon on the show, which delves further into the Cooper family and Sheldon's experiences in school.

Young Sheldon has become a big success for CBS, especially since The Big Bang Theory ended its run in 2019. The current fourth season has seen Sheldon graduate high school and move onto his undergrad years at East Texas Tech. Much to the delight of fans of the original series, Young Sheldon has still found ways to connect to The Big Bang Theory through fun cameos and references. The most recent Big Bang Theory cameo, which took place in Young Sheldon's season 4 premiere, had Mayim Bialik provide some voiceover as Amy Farrah Fowler, Sheldon's future wife.

Further supporting just how big of a hit Young Sheldon is, Deadline reports CBS has renewed the Chuck Lorre-produced series through season 7, adding three to its current total. Young Sheldon remains the most-watched comedy on television, and it will now remain a staple of CBS through the 2023-24 season. This comes on the heels of fellow sitcoms The Neighborhood and Bob Hearts Abishola (another Lorre series) being renewed as well. CBS Entertainment President Kelly Kahl said this in a statement:

“Under Chuck Lorre’s and Steve Molaro’s deft leadership, this superb cast and gifted writers have truly brought these wonderful characters to life. Young Sheldon dominates the broadcast comedy landscape by over +2.5 million viewers and is the lynchpin of CBS’ top-rated Thursday comedy lineup. The humor, warmth and heart exuded by the Cooper family is an undeniable hook for the millions of fans who tune in each week. We’re excited to see what the next three seasons have in store for a slightly older Sheldon and all the Coopers.”

Graduation Episode of Young Sheldon

As the Allison Janney-fronted Mom will come to an end during this current season, Young Sheldon is poised to be CBS' longest-running comedy that is currently on air. The Big Bang Theory eked out 12 seasons in total, so there could still be plenty of life left in Young Sheldon once it reaches the end of this latest renewal. Fans will know there are several major events left in Sheldon's life to cover, so there is still a great deal of story to sift through. With three more seasons already guaranteed, Young Sheldon can sit back and plan out its next few years in peace.

Young Sheldon's continued existence means there will also be several more opportunities for Big Bang Theory cameos. In addition to Bialik, Kaley Cuoco lent her voice to one episode of Young Sheldon in season 3, and there could be more on the way. CBS has found great success in continuing their Big Bang Theory franchise with this series, and they won't be letting it go any time soon.
