A new Young Sheldon season 5 promo spot reveals The Big Bang Theory's Howard Wolowitz cameo. Played by Simon Helberg for 12 seasons in the CBS nerd-centric sitcom, the character was known for his cocky attitude and odd sense of humor, not to mention his borderline inappropriate relationship with his mother. While Sheldon (Jim Parsons) loved poking fun at all of his friends, he always zeroed in on Howard as he isn't a physicist and doesn't have a Ph.D. like the rest of his male pals.

Sheldon's bullying of Howard went on for years. Initially, Howard was a bit defensive, but over time, he got used to it. When he was sent to the International Space Station, his confidence skyrocketed so much, that even if Sheldon continued to rag on him, he would just point out that in their group, he's the only one who had been to space. Despite their constant bickering, the pair had a solid relationship. When Mrs. Wolowitz (voiced by Carol Ann Susi) died, Sheldon offered genuine encouraging words to her son who was struggling with her death. Now, almost three years since The Big Bang Theory wrapped up, CBS is offering fans an update regarding the status of Howard and Sheldon's relationship.

This isn't the first time cast members from The Big Bang Theory have gotten involved in Young Sheldon. Back in season 3, Penny voiced the water in Sheldon's (Iain Armitage) dream. After that, Mayim Bialik reprised her role as Amy Farrah-Fowler as part of the prequel's revelation that she and her husband now share a son named Leonard Cooper. What is interesting, however, is that CBS didn't publicize those guest appearances. The reveal was saved for the episodes themselves. So, it's curious why CBS has not only let Helberg's return be spoiled but also prominently used the character for the upcoming Young Sheldon outing's promotions. Regardless of the reason why, fans of The Big Bang Theory are still thrilled to know that one of Sheldon's Pasadena friends will make an appearance in the period project. As seen in the aforementioned video, there seems to be some signature Sheldon and Howard bickering involved, which is always fun to see.

Perhaps Helberg's appearance in Young Sheldon season 5 is part of CBS' continued effort to establish a stronger connection between the prequel and the original series. It's no secret that some fans of The Big Bang Theory aren't exactly thrilled with the spin-off's lax approach to preserving continuity. This has resulted in the creation of several plot holes and inconsistencies. Maybe bringing back some of those beloved characters from the old sitcom can make amends for that.
