Young Sheldon Season 3

Young Sheldon season 3 is coming, but when will it premiere and what can fans expect from the story? Young Sheldon finished its second season the same night The Big Bang Theory ended. But unlike it parent series, the spinoff is slated to return for more adventures for the boy genius and his family. Here's everything we know about the third season of the prequel show.

Created by the same minds behind The Big Bang Theory, Chuck Lorre and Steven Molaro, Young Sheldon debuted in 2017 with a 22-episode first season. On the heels of The Big Bang Theory's cancellation, CBS renewed Young Sheldon for two more seasons, locking its TV return later this year and 2020. But first, we look at what the immediate future lies ahead for the boy genius in Young Sheldon season 3.

Young Sheldon Season 3 Release Date Info

In the first two seasons, the Young Sheldon premiere date has tied into The Big Bang Theory's own premiere, but despite its parent series wrapping up after 12 seasons, there's a good chance that the spinoff will have a similar schedule. Young Sheldon season 3 should premiere sometime in the third week of September, just like in the last two years.

With Young Sheldon already locked in for at least two more seasons, it's all but confirmed that it'll remain on its Thursday time slot during the next fall TV season. Unless CBS implements a massive shake-up to cover the void that The Big Bang Theory is leaving in its programming schedule, there's no reason that Young Sheldon moves to another day, especially considering that it'll be partnered up with another hit comedy, Mom (also co-created by Lorre), starring Anna Faris and Allison Janney.

Starting with a nine-year-old Sheldon, Young Sheldon continues to tackle the character's ups and downs during his high school year. But depending on how the show utilizes the passage of time, Young Sheldon season 3 could see him at age 11 - which means that he should officially enter college soon, according to what's established in The Big Bang Theory. Hints of his upcoming college stint popped out last season with universities starting to notice his advanced intellect, which could be indicative of this.

Aside from Sheldon's personal life, fans can also expect further development in the lives' of other family members of the Cooper household. George Sr. and Mary, in particular, had a rough time in Young Sheldon season 2; having to deal with financial issues, getting pregnant, and eventually losing the baby. We know from The Big Bang Theory that, in a couple of years, Sheldon's parents' marriage will go through a very rocky path with his father eventually cheating.

Will There Be Other Big Bang Theory Spinoffs?

Young Sheldon and TBBT Crossover

With a show as popular as The Big Bang Theory, it makes sense that CBS would want to build an entire franchise off of its back, hence Young Sheldon. But with the long-running sitcom wrapping up, the interest to green light another offshoot has been higher than ever. Apparently, there were talks for a new spinoff, but creator Chuck Lorre revealed that it was eventually scrapped, saying that the only way he'll work on another offshoot is if there's a good story for it. CBS has gone on record a couple of times that they're open for another idea from Lorre and his team. Despite no active talks with regard to a new spinoff, it's difficult to imagine that the network will turn down one considering how well both The Big Bang Theory and Young Sheldon are doing in the ratings.
