Sheldon's behavior on Young Sheldon makes his story about George's cheating scandal on The Big Bang Theory impossible. The socially-inept genius loved reminiscing about his childhood in Texas with his family, but not all of his stories were good ones; some of them are heartbreaking, including his recollection of catching his dad cheating on his mom. Since Young Sheldon deals with this specific time in Sheldon's life, there's anticipation at seeing how it all pans out on the small screen, although the family comedy has yet to properly set it up. That being said, a detail on Young Sheldon suggests that this incident may not have happened after all.

Ever since Sheldon confessed the real reason for his three-knock habit on The Big Bang Theory, there has been anticipation for seeing how the incident that prompted it plays out on the small screen. Young Sheldon has already delayed George's cheating scandal significantly and understandably so, considering how it will change the family comedy's overall tone. As the prequel moves up the established The Big Bang Theory timeline, however, pressure mounts to finally set it up, although there may be a reason to fully do away with it.

Sheldon Is Knocking Already On Young Sheldon

Sheldon knocking on Penny's door in The Big Bang Theory

On The Big Bang Theory season 10, Sheldon told Penny the origin story of his odd habit of knocking thrice. According to him, when he was 13 years old, he accidentally walked in on George having sexual relations with another woman in his and his mom’s bedroom. The problem with this is, Sheldon already regularly knocks on Young Sheldon. Granted that he doesn’t do it three times before entering, this still makes it impossible to imagine Sheldon just barging in on George while he’s cheating. On Young Sheldon’s 100th episode, the socially-inept genius doesn’t even just step inside Missy’s room despite the door being open without knocking first.

Will Young Sheldon Tackle George’s Cheating Scandal?

George and Brenda looking surprised in Young Sheldon

The Young Sheldon season 4 finale floated the idea that George may finally start an affair following his flirtatious night with Brenda Sparks at the local bar. Unfortunately, after The Big Bang Theory prequel used that incident to incite tension between the neighbors, the show has seemingly just forgotten about it. Instead, it shifted focus to Mary who developed an attraction towards Youth Pastor Rob, but even that seems to have already been cast aside by the family sitcom. Young Sheldon season 6 has gone on an unexpected turn with Mary and George suddenly rekindling their romance, leading to a blissful time for their marriage.

Despite the Cooper parents fixing their relationship, The Big Bang Theory prequel has no choice but to ultimately tackle George’s impending Young Sheldon cheating scandal. The spin-off has gotten away with breaking continuity many times in its run, but it absolutely can’t disregard the Cooper patriarch’s affair given its profound impact on Sheldon. The incident is also a precursor to George’s inevitable death which changes the trajectory of his family’s life. Given these, it’s totally imperative for Young Sheldon to show George’s affair. Otherwise, the offshoot could fully destroy The Big Bang Theory’s established canon.

Young Sheldon season 6 airs Thursdays on CBS.
