Netflix announced that Young Royals season 2 has officially wrapped production. The Swedish teen drama series, which was created by Lisa Ambjörn, Lars Beckung, and Camilla Holter, premiered on the streaming service in July 2021. In addition to Malte Gårdinger, Frida Argento, Nikita Uggla, and Omar Rudberg, the series stars Edvin Ryding as Prince Wilhelm, a rebellious royal who gets into a fight and as a result is sent to the prestigious Hillerska prep school to get him straightened out. Although the going is tough at first, he comes to appreciate his time at the school and the people that surround him.
Young Royals season 1, which chronicled Wilhelm's sexual awakening, saw him falling in love with his Hillserska classmate Simon (Rudberg). However, the series threw a wrench in their blossoming love when an unexpected accident caused him to suddenly become first in line for the throne. Although the responsibility isn't even necessarily something that he wants, it may take him away from Hillerska, his new friends, and Simon for good.
On their official Twitter account, Netflix shared a post announcing that Young Royals season 2 has wrapped production. They did so by including two photos from the final day, shared by s Ryding and Omar Rudberg on their respective Instagram stories. The photos, which are accompanied by a caption teasing "what's next for Wilhelm and Simon," are both taken from across the lawn at the location used for the Hillerska school, either implying that the final scenes shot may have taken place outside the building or the fact that both stars took the photos while on their way off set for the final day. Although Young Royals season 2 was announced in September 2021, it didn't begin filming until February of this year for reasons likely due to COVID-related delays. However, with this wrap announcement coming so quickly, it seems to have been able to complete production smoothly. Considering how far it is into the year, it's still unlikely that season 2 will come sooner than early 2023, but the gears are certainly in motion and the release date should be announced relatively soon.
Wilhelm and Simon's relationship arc will most likely provide the drama at the center of Young Royals season 2. Their secret certainly isn't likely to remain a secret for long and that should provide some drama as Wilhelm deals with the fallout from the accident that puts him next in line for the throne. In addition to the challenges around being openly LGBTQ+ in the public eye, Simon will have to face the scrutiny that comes with being involved with the royal family and assess if his relationship with Prince Wilhelm is worth it.
