You has been renewed for season 5 at Netflix, which will be the final season of the acclaimed Netflix series. Season 4 ended with Joe Goldberg garnering more power than he ever thought possible as Kate Lockwood's boyfriend, confessing his past to her and using her resources to clean up his public image. He also accepted his darker half, which manifested itself as a murderous version of politician Rhys Montrose, who became Joe's inner alter ego.

According to Variety, Netflix has confirmed that You season 5 is happening, and will be the show's final season. Season 5 will see a change behind the scenes, with showrunner Sera Gamble stepping down, and the position going to executive producers Michael Foley and Justin W. Lo. Check out what Gamble had to say about You season 5 and her leaving the showrunner position to Foley and Lo:

As I step back from day-to-day showrunning to focus on new projects, I’m immensely grateful to co-creator and all-around genius Greg Berlanti, Caroline Kepnes, my friends at Berlanti Productions and Alloy Entertainment, and our steadfast partners at Warner Bros and Netflix. Making the show alongside our writers, producers, directors, cast and crew has been an honor and ridiculously fun. And I feel lucky to have worked with an artist as gifted and thoughtful as Penn Badgely. I’m proud of what we’ve all accomplished and feel privileged to pass the torch. I’m excited to watch and support the ‘You’ team as they bring Joe Goldberg’s journey to its delightfully twisted conclusion.

What To Expect From You Season 5

Penn Badgley as Joe in You season 4, part 2 looking intense

Star Penn Badgley teased Joe's newfound power in season 5 already thanks to the Lockwood family resources he now has at his disposal. With so many resources at his fingertips, coupled with accepting the darker side of himself that finds pleasure in chaos and killing, Joe could easily ensure he's never punished for his crimes for the rest of his life. However, with people like Nadia, Marienne, and Dr. Nicky knowing the truth about Joe, it may be just a matter of time before his past sins catch up with him.

You season 4 ended with Joe in the best place he's ever been in at the end of a season, meaning it would make sense for season 5 to finally tear him down. His past catching up with him may be the best way for this to transpire. Despite not appearing in You season 4 due to scheduling conflicts, Jenna Ortega has expressed interest in reprising her role as Ellie from season 2. Ellie's whereabouts are currently unknown, but she could return in season 5, perhaps learning the true extent of Joe's crimes and deciding to take him down.

While Gamble herself teased You season 5 would end with justice for what Joe has done, her absence as showrunner in the final season could mean the series is set to go down a much darker path. The amount of power Joe has coupled with his acceptance of himself as a killer could mean he manages to get away with everything, even whatever challenges season 5 stacks up against him. It's still unclear how Joe's story will truly end, but You season 5 still has a chance to deliver justice for all the bodies Joe has piled up throughout the series.
