Why You Season 5 Will Likely Be The Last According To Penn Badgley

Warning: This article contains major spoilers for You season 4The question of who could bring down Joe Goldberg in You season 5 has been addressed by showrunner Sera Gamble. With its second half now streaming on Netflix, You season 4 altered the course of the series in a major way. While it's unclear how much Kate (Charlotte Ritchie) actually knows about the past of Joe (Penn Badgley), she has the resources and the PR team to help clean up his image. More concerning still, Joe doesn't seem to have much guilt about committing crimes and doing what he believes is needed to protect himself.

But in new comments shared with TVLine, Gamble reveals that Joe isn't in the clear yet. The co-creator and showrunner reveals that the writers have kept track of anyone that knows the truth about Joe, sharing details about some of them, and making clear that the lead character isn't safe heading into You season 5. Gamble's quote is below:

“We have kept scrupulous track of everybody who knows anything about Joe who’s not dead. The ones who are dead could still appear in dreams and hallucinations. There are some very smart people who are alive. Some of them are in jail, and some of them are basically in witness protection, but there’s no reason to believe he’s safe.”

Who Could Return In You Season 5?

Joe Jenna Ortega You

She's not mentioned by name, but Jenna Ortega's Ellie is a strong candidate for a You season 5 return, especially after her season 4 absence. Gamble has said that there were plans to bring the character back, but those plans fell through because Ortega was busy working on Wednesday. For her part, Ortega has also said she would have liked to come back as early as season 3.

Other candidates for a return include Paco (Luca Padovan), who hasn't been seen since You season 1. There is also Dr. Nicky, who recurred early on in the show. You season 4 adds to the tally, as both Marienne (Tati Gabrielle) and Nadia (Amy-Leigh Hickman) know full well what Joe is capable of, as do Sherry (Shalita Grant) and Cary (Travis Van Winkle) from season 3.

Badgley has hinted that, if it happens, You season 5 could be the end. It's too early to say what those last episodes will look like, but it might be a safe bet that Joe will receive some karmic justice from all the different people that he's wronged. That would be one clear and satisfying farewell to the twisty romantic thriller, especially if Joe's downfall comes from a thousand little cuts, each one representing one returning character.
