He might not have had a big role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Guardians of the Galaxy movies, but Kraglin was still memorable for plenty of fans. We'll see if he'll return in Guardians Vol. 3, but in the comics at least, Kraglin's unlikely to appear any time soon -- mostly because he just got shot in the chest.

It's the end of a surprisingly long life for the space pirate. He first appeared over fifty years ago as a faceless alien invader from the planet A-Chiltar III tangling with Ant-Man and the Wasp in the pages of Tales to AstonishGuardians writer-director must have liked the name, because he gave it to his brother Sean Gunn's character in the first film. In the movies, Kraglin wasn't an alien invader but a member of the space-raiding Ravagers who had raised Chris Pratt's Peter "Star-Lord" Quill.

He served as the right-hand man for their ringleader, Yondu (Michael Rooker), and Vol. 2 deepened Kraglin's character when he turned on him to join Taserface's mutiny. That decision ended up saving his life, but watching Taserface murder Yondu's loyal shipmates gave him second thoughts. Guilty and traumatized, he snuck into Yondu's cell and gave him a head fin that would allow him to control his arrows and escape. Kraglin also made a brief appearance in Avengers: Infinity War as the new leader of the Ravagers when they joined the Avengers in the climactic Battle of Earth.

The character was enough of a hit to make the jump to the comics. In 2017's All-New Guardians of the Galaxy Annual by Chad Bowers, Chris Sims, Danilo S. Beyruth, and Tamra Bonvillain, the Guardians were defending the earth against an invasion by the Chitauri. Unfortunately, during the Secret Empire crossover, Captain America had been brainwashed by the fascist organization HYDRA and put the USA under his boot. One of his first actions as supreme leader was to seal the earth behind a force-field, which did nothing to discourage the Chitauri, but left the Guardians and Captain Marvel unable to call anyone on earth for backup. They break Yondu out of prison hoping he can help, but instead he hijacks their ship with the help of the Ravagers - including Kraglin. He's still got his trademark red Ravager jacket and upswept hair, but while the movie version was more or less human, the comics version has bug eyes and blue fur.

Yondu Comic Kraglin Death Preview

Kraglin's return was brief. This Wednesday's Yondu #1 will launch the space raider on his first solo adventure, and it's off to a rough start. In the preview pages, Yondu responds to Kraglin's for "safe transport after a weapons deal" from "somewhere in the %$@# end Tittleman's Quist." Yondu ends up being too late to ensure his friend's safety: by the bottom of the page, he's found Kraglin's body with a big hole blown through it. The weapons deal turns out to be very, very big and very, very dangerous: around the corner, Yondu finds the Herald's Urn, one of "the few artifacts in the galaxy worth more than anything else."

What makes it so valuable? Who killed the Ravagers for it, and why did they leave it behind? How far will Yondu go to avenge his friend? We'll know the answer to at least some of these questions when Yondu #1 arrives on Wednesday.

Yondu #1 will be available at your local comic book shop on November 6th, 2019.
