Luke Grimes and Kelsey Asbille Interview: Yellowstone

When Yellowstone returns on June 19th, one of its core couples will be further apart than ever. After separating last season, Monica finds herself raising her son alone on the reservation while her husband Kayce goes back to work for his father's ranch. Kelsey Asbille and Luke Grimes, who play the lovers on the rocks, shared some of their thoughts about the relationship with Screen Rant. They also discussed how their now disparate storylines will affect the world of Paramount Network's Western.

Your relationship is one of my favorite parts [of Yellowstone]. Back in season 1, it seemed like you had an unbreakable bond, and then of course that did not turn out to be the case. Is your relationship forever damaged, or can you guys find your way back to each other?

Luke Grimes: I wish I knew the answer to that question. The nature of doing this show is we kind of find out as we go, as well. I think they would want nothing more –

Kelsey Asbille: I was going to say we root for them.

Luke Grimes: Yeah, we personally hope that they end up together. But you never know. Kayce is trying very much to try to scramble and fix what he can about himself to be able to get her back.

But for now, Monica is alone on the reservation. Are we going to get to see more of her personal life and the choices she makes for herself and her son?

Kelsey Asbille: Absolutely. You see her navigate what life looks like without the Duttons and being a single mom and being a single lady. He doesn’t like that as much.

You’re back on the [ranch]. Are there any sibling rivalries we’re going to explore next season?

Luke Grimes: Yeah, I’m back on the ranch. There’s a lot of people you didn’t really get to see Kayce with – I think he and Beth only had one scene together the whole first season. And now you see at the end of season 1, he’s sleeping in the bunkhouse. He’s now going to family dinners at the big house, so you’re starting to kind of see him bleed into these other storylines. That was really fun, actually. It was nice to kind of get to see some new people.

Then there’s Tate, who’s kind of stuck in the middle between these two opposing forces. Are we going to see him at the center of conflicts, and how do each of you approach single parenting?

Kelsey Asbille: I think, yeah, you do see him act out and what it’s like to be between. I think Kayce and Monica are so easy on him, because they do realize the situation that he’s in. And Brecken is so talented, he does a really great job. We’ve been able to see him kind of grow up over the years, too. He’ll be driving and going on dates. Not really, he’s 10.

Finally, there’s a Prodigal Son aspect of Kayce returning to the ranch, and then you’ve got Rip who’s always been the right hand of the father. Is there any tension between the two of you about the way things get done on the ranch?

Luke Grimes: Absolutely. A lot of it. That’s a big storyline in season 2, just how do you get these two Alpha-type dudes to work together rather than against each other. And, you know, they have to realize who the real boss is. So, yeah, that was a really fun story. It’s not a fun storyline at all, but it was fun to work on.
