Warning! Spoilers for Yellowjackets' season 1 finale.

Showtime's new hit series won't be off the air for long - Yellowjackets season 2 is slated to premiere in 2022. The series follows the titular soccer team in two timelines. In 1996, the Yellowjackets are on their way to nationals when their plane crashes in the Canadian wilderness where the team is stranded for 19 months. In 2021, the surviving Yellowjackets (including Shauna, Misty, Natalie, Taissa, and the recently confirmed Lottie), continue to deal with the trauma of what happened in the wilderness during those 19 months in increasingly frenetic ways.

After Yellowjackets first premiered in November 2021, the show has experienced week-to-week growth, becoming the second most-watched show for Showtime's streamer behind Dexter: New BloodYellowjackets season 2 was quickly picked up by the network. As audiences continue to discover all the delightfully horrifying pleasures of Yellowjackets, the series has become one of the most-talked-about shows of the year and audiences were dreading the wait between seasons as many mysteries remain unresolved. Now, it appears that the wait won't be too long.

Speaking to Vulture, Showtime's president of entertainment Gary Levine revealed that Yellowjackets season 2 will likely premiere sometime in 2022. Levine did not reveal a specific date, but he did say that the network hopes the show will stay on an annual cycle, producing one season per year. Levine cites the show's momentum and its dedicated audience as reasons behind fast-tracking the show. Check out his full comments below:

We are working towards a premiere at the end of 2022. We’d love to stay on an annual cycle. I think our audiences deserve that, and I also think that when you have a show that has this kind of a momentum, you don’t want to let it dissolve.

Creators Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson say they have a 5 season plan for Yellowjackets which is a good sign for the acclaimed series. With a story mapped out, it seems likely that they already know the direction of Yellowjackets season 2 and with the renewal of the show happening in the middle of season 1, it's possible that the scripts for the sophomore entry are already well underway. For the diehard fans of the series, this will be a major relief, especially after the shocking Yellowjackets season finale.

The ending of Yellowjackets provided plenty of long-awaited answers, including how Ella Purnell's Jackie died, who was likely behind Travis' death in the present-day timeline, and just what Taissa has been up to. It also revealed that there's at least one remaining Yellowjackets survivor in the present day that audiences have yet to meet - Lottie - and she may be leading some sort of cult that is continuing the traditions the team established in the wilderness. Despite all these answers, though, the finale left plenty of questions for Yellowjackets season 2 and the fact that answers will be coming within the calendar year may make the wait just a little bit easier.
