Without a doubt, Misty Quigley is one of the funniest and most fascinating characters in Yellowjackets thanks to her quirky combination of peppy optimism and savage unpredictability. Christina Ricci, known for making sociopaths likable, could convey the passive-aggressive sincerity in Misty's dialogue. The equipment manager for the Yellowjackets soccer team wasn't always accepted by the other girls, but when they were stuck in the wilderness following a harrowing plane crash in 1996, Misty's competency got them through one terrifying event after another.

Even as an adult in 2021, whether she's helping Natalie sneak around her ex's house or kidnapping the reporter trying to dig up dirt about the 18 months they spent in the wilderness, Misty has a darkly funny quote for any occasion.

Misty Doesn't Have Time For Your Opinions

"Opinion Is The Wilderness Between Knowledge And Ignorance."

Misty (Samantha Hanratty) on the phone with bullies in Yellowjackets

In a flashback to 1996, viewers get to see what Misty's home life is like, which mostly involves her spending time alone in her room waiting for her phone to ring. When it does, the voices on the other end of the line sound like a group of girls making fun of her, disrespecting her appearance and her "weird" extracurricular activities.

Standing her ground, Misty makes this bold statement, the astuteness of which sounds comical coming out of someone so young and eager for attention. Still, it highlights Misty's resourcefulness as she weaponizes her knowledge of literature to cut through the antagonism, while also foreshadowing the other "wilderness" she'll experience later in the series.

Misty's Even Funny When She's Serious

"Your Leg Is Gone. I Chopped It Off."

Coach Scott talking to Misty in Yellowjackets

As an adult, Misty turns her Red Cross training into a career in nursing, where her overly cheerful disposition is off-putting to the patients instead of comforting. While she thinks she has a lovely bedside manner, a flashback to the wilds of Ontario proves otherwise.

When Coach Ben comes to after suffering a horrific injury that leaves him without a right leg, he demands to know what happened. Without missing a beat Misty points out the obvious, with no effort to mollify his adrenaline and anxiety. This quote has so little tact and elicits such a contrary response to what Misty expects, it might be the very reason she adapts her personality decades later.

Misty's Dating Life Is Robust

"Then There Was Hiking Guy. He Seemed Pretty Normal, Except Afterwards He Asked Me For My Socks."

Filling a three-hour road trip with conversation isn't difficult for Misty, and whether Natalie wants to hear it or not, she's content to rattle off a complete oral history of her love life. Natalie has a hard time believing that not one single man proved to be a keeper, but Misty has her own theories.

Hearing the extensive reasons for why Misty's dates never go anywhere isn't just hilarious because of her descriptions, but because the audience knows that more than likely, all of these men came up with very weird excuses never to see her again.

Misty Has A Unique Outlook On Love

"At Our Age, They’re All Just Crumbs At The Bottom Of The Chip Bag."

For all her insecurities from childhood Misty still tries to find true love, only to be rejected when the men she dates think of her as too bizarre and desperate. Unconcerned, Misty continues to look for romance on myriad dating apps, never seeming to get too discouraged.

As she so memorably tells Nat, the men in their age group are "crumbs at the bottom of the chip bag," a revealing statement that comes across as projection, intended to invalidate her dates rather than face the alternative: They don't find her appealing either.

One Person's Trash Is A Citizen Detective's Treasure

"You Can Learn So Much About A Person By Going Through Their Personal Refuse.”

Time after time, Misty demonstrates that she's actually one of the most intelligent characters in the series by looking at things outside the box. When she and Natalie break into Travis's house to investigate clues about his disappearance, it's Misty who suggests going through his garbage.

Whereas anyone else would be disgusted by having to sift through trash, as a Citizen Detective Misty is thrilled to have the opportunity to show off her deductive skills. She proves that one person's trash is another's treasure.

Misty's A Bit Of An Actress

"Mainly I’ve Been Trying To Channel You, So Dark And Deadpan."

Misty's love life might not be anything to write a creepy postcard about, but it doesn't stop her from believing true love is out there for others. She even plays matchmaker for Natalie and Kevyn, Nat's old high school friend --now a detective-- who has always been secretly in love with her.

When Nat finds out that Misty has been posing as her in text messages to get Kevyn interested she's understandably furious. Misty reassures her that she's done an excellent job portraying Nat's personality so that Kevyn is none the wiser, mainly channeling her "dark and deadpan" demeanor. This banter between the two as they drive around is reminiscent of the kind found in the funniest road trip movies.

Misty Loves Her Bird

"Caligula Hasn’t Learned How To Use The Phone Yet.”

Yellowjackets Misty Christina Ricci

Only someone as eccentric as Misty would name her bird "Caligula" after the third Roman emperor known for his debaucherous lifestyle filled with orgies and rampant violence. In many ways, naming her pet after such a historical figure is fitting considering what happened to Misty and her friends before they got rescued.

Misty declaring that Caligula hasn't learned how to operate a telephone ironically juxtaposes something part of polite society (placing a phone call) with someone very much not (a mercurial Roman Emperor) and seems to contort the idea of civilization with something from the animal kingdom.

Misty's Honest About How She Feels

"Uncomfortable Silences Make Me Uncomfortable."

Yellowjackets Christian Ricci as Misty.

When Misty feels nervous she becomes a complete chatterbox, which is just about every time she's around Natalie. As adults, the pair are very different from one another despite their shared trauma; Misty is bubbly and positive, while Nat is aggressive and pessimistic.

When they become an unlikely dynamic duo investigating Travis's death, Natalie has no problem working in silence, but as Misty informs her, uncomfortable silences make her uncomfortable. This stems from the fact that Misty spent much of her teenage years wondering if anyone liked her for who she was rather than what she could do for them, and so without constant reassurance by way of continued conversation, she second-guesses her worth and stews in passive-aggressive rage.

Misty Takes One For The Team

"I’ll Probably Be Dead In A Few Minutes But I Was Willing To Take That Risk For You."

Misty looking at someone offscreen in Yellowjackets.

Misty knows a thing or two about teamwork, and when she suspects that Natalie is so upset over Travis's death that she might do something drastic to herself, she doesn't let her friend face crippling grief alone. Misty barrels into Natalie's hotel room and, rather than wipe it off the bed, starts to do all the cocaine Nat was about to do for herself.

Misty has no tolerance for hard drugs but there she is, willing to do a massive amount to preserve one of Yellowjacket's best relationships. That Misty retains her cheerful optimism even in the face of possibly ODing herself is a prime example of the show's distinctly dark sense of humor.

Misty Knows How To Lighten The Mood

"Who Died?"

Misty Quigley smiling on Yellowjackets

When Misty arrives to assess the situation surrounding Adam's demise, she finds Shauna, Taissa, and Natalie distraught over having to cover up a murder. In characteristic Misty fashion, she cracks a joke to lighten the mood, though the other women don't see the slowly burgeoning pool of blood around Adam's body to be any laughing matter.

Misty is surrounded by death every day as a caregiver at a nursing home for the elderly and therefore isn't in the least bit phased by having to do away with another dead body. In fact, it's her in at the home that allows her to get rid of crucial identifying evidence. Namely, Adam's head and hands.
