It is no secret that Yamcha is arguably the most disappointing character in the history of Dragon Ball. Yamcha started off as this badass desert bandit with unique martial arts techniques–like the undeniably awesome Wolf Fang Fist–and then just became a complete joke whose only contribution to the Z-Fighters is being kind of good at baseball. As heartbreaking as his fall from grace was, Yamcha has become Dragon Ball’s worst Z-Fighter, and one chapter proves that even he knows it.

When Yamcha was introduced in the early pages of Dragon Ball, he wasn’t a trusted ally of Goku and the gang like he is today, but rather a hardened villain who wouldn’t think twice about robbing someone in the desert and leaving them with nothing. After meeting Goku and Bulma, however, Yamcha made the decision to give up his life of crime for good and focus on studying martial arts–and he got really good at it, too. Not only did Yamcha participate in every World Martial Arts Tournament in the original Dragon Ball run, but he even studied under Kami during the Saiyan Saga and was named one of the few fighters strong enough to complete the training of a god. From Yamcha’s cool aesthetic to his proven skill, he should have been one of Dragon Ball’s best characters and a top fighter of Earth alongside Krillin and Tien–but instead, he decided to suck (and in more ways than one).

In Dragon Ball chapter 430 by Akira Toriyama, all the original Z-Fighters–with the addition of Vegeta, Trunks, Goten, and Gohan–are participating in this year’s World Martial Arts Tournament just like they did during the original Dragon Ball days. This chapter shows each one of them training for the tournament as they all want to prove once and for all who the greatest fighter on Earth really is. While on their way to the tournament in Bulma’s plane, Chi-Chi sits next to Yamcha and asks if he is going to participate like the rest of the squad, to which he replies, “Are you crazy? I’ll be an embarrassment…”.

Yamcha is Only the Worst Because He Allows Himself To Be

Even Yamcha knows he's DBZ's worst fighter.

Even though Yamcha is correct in assuming that he would embarrass himself trying to fight against the likes of Vegeta, Goku, and Gohan, the thing that’s the most frustrating here isn’t his lack of power in relation to the literal Super Saiyans, but the fact that he didn’t sign up for the tournament anyway. The World Martial Arts Tournament is something these guys have done since they were practically kids. Even if they didn’t think they’d have a chance at winning, the Z-Fighters always entered just to have fun in a safe and enriching environment–and it’s not like this year’s tournament was only going to have fighters as strong as the Saiyans, either. Krillin signed up to participate, and Yamcha easily could have kept up with him if he continued his training. Not only that, but a ton of unknown fighters were also going to be there, giving Yamcha even more of a reason to do it–but instead of doing something meaningful with his friends, Yamcha just admits that he’s lame and sits on the sidelines.

This Dragon Ball chapter perfectly sums up fans’ collective frustration with Yamcha. If he just kept up with his training, he could have been on-par with the likes of Krillin and Tien. While those two may not be as strong as the Saiyans, they are still incredibly powerful as explicitly shown in Dragon Ball Super’s Tournament of Power. But, despite years of fighting alongside the best warriors on Earth and possibly even the multiverse, as well as training under god himself, Yamcha allowed himself to become Dragon Ball’s worst fighter–and what’s worse is that he admits it rather than working to become the fighter fans wished he would be.
