FX on Hulu officially releases the opening scene from Y: The Last Man as the apocalyptic adaptation premieres on the streaming platform. The drama is based on the comic book series of the same name from Brian K. Vaughn and Pia Guerra in which a mysterious cataclysmic event simultaneously kills every mammal with a Y chromosome save for one man, Yorick Brown, and his pet Capuchin monkey Ampersand, who traverses the new world and finds survivors struggling with their losses and to restore new world order, namely Yorick's mother and new U.S. President Jennifer Brown. The cast for the series includes Ben Schnetzer, Diane Lane, Ashley Romans, Olivia Thirlby, Juliana Canfield, Elliot Fletcher, Marin Ireland and Amber Tamblyn.

An adaptation of Y: The Last Man has been in the works for nearly 15 years, first beginning as a film at New Line Cinema with D.J. Caruso set to direct and David S. Goyer set to produce, though due to higher-ups at the studio unable to grasp the material through multiple drafts and unwillingness to develop the comics as Caruso's envisioned trilogy, the project would eventually fall apart. 10 Cloverfield Lane's Dan Trachtenberg was briefly attached to direct the film with a script ready to go, though the rights would later revert back to Vaughan and Guerra and the two would later partner with FX to develop it into a series with multiple showrunners coming and going before ultimately landing on Eliza Clark. After finally wrapping production in July due to multiple COVID-19-related delays, the series is officially here.

The opening scene for Y: The Last Man does a nice job of establishing the tone and atmosphere audiences can come to expect from the rest of the series. Given its post-apocalyptic setting and the extent of the mysterious plague, it's not a surprise to see the level of devastation left in its wake, but it nonetheless comes as a horrifying sight to see the farm fields and city streets littered with bodies rather than properly cleared out. Though it may not offer much in the way of what the plot will ultimately entail for Yorick, it nonetheless serves as an engrossing mood setter.

Additionally, the video for Y: The Last Man shows the impressive CGI work put into bringing Ampersand to life for the series. While FX is not a network known for skimping on their production budgets or style, the detailed work put into creating the photorealistic Capuchin is nothing short of a blockbuster film. It will be interesting to see how the animation holds up with each episode as the series continues from its first three episodes, which are now streaming on Hulu.
