A new image from Y: The Last Man unveils the first glimpse at Yorick in a post-apocalyptic world. An adaptation of Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra's highly-praised eponymous comics, which released 10 volumes between 2002 and 2008, Y: The Last Man chronicles the life of Yorick, as he, along with his pet monkey, emerges as the sole survivor in a worldwide androcide that obliterated every mammal with a Y chromosome from the face of the Earth. Yorick must now learn to live with the new challenges, while also striving to restore all that has been lost in order to create a more habitable planet.

Rumblings of the live-action adaptation of Y: The Last Man go as far back as 2009. But the show remained in limbo until 2015 when FX finally began taking interest in the project. Yet the progress remained slow and the network only handed out a pilot order in 2018, followed by a series order in 2019. Although the show was officially greenlit, its problems were far from over. Initially, Aïda Mashaka Croal and Michael Green were serving as showrunners, but they left the show due to creative issues. They were then replaced by Eliza Clark, and shortly afterwards the original lead Barry Keoghan also exited the series. Keoghan's departure prompted an extensive hunt for a new male lead. And when Ben Schnetzer was eventually roped in as the new hero, the show had to suspend production because of the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic in the US. Now, however, Y: The Last Man is fully back on track, and a first-look photo from the sets proves the same.

Showrunner Eliza Clark (via Instagram) released a new look at Yorick from Y: The Last Man Standing. The picture finds a copiously masked Yorick standing atop a taxi in a munted NYC street. He is also holding a pet carrier, presumably containing his pet capuchin, Ampersand. The image doesn't reveal much about the story of Y: The Last Man, but it does give a visual description of how the apocalypse would look in the show. It also sets up the ominous tone of the show, as Yorick is standing alone in what should have been a busy road, dressed in dark overalls, like those seen in dystopian dramas.

The new image solidifies Y: The Last Man's substantial headway. Over its course of development, the show had hit quite a few snags. But now, it's actively filming to wrap up production by July. FX has already scheduled the show to premiere on Monday, September 13, and small footage depicting the main apocalyptic event has also been released. A significant aspect concerning the broadcast of the show is that although Y: The Last Man was originally conceived for FX's linear cable network, the show has since moved to FX on Hulu, the streaming home for shows like Mrs America and A Teacher. There the show will launch alongside the AHS spin-off American Horror Stories, which is set for a July 15 release.

With its premiere not so far away, it's not surprising that tidbits from the show like the image above have begun to surface. In fact, fans can expect more content to arrive in the coming days, as the makers would likely want to kick off the promotional campaign as soon as possible. It's true that Y: The Last Man standing has encountered unprecedented obstacles over the years, which included everything from production delays to accusations of animal abuse by PETA. But now, those challenges are behind the show, and the series is finally heading towards a successful launch. That said, hopefully, fans will learn more about Y: The Last Man as more photos arrive from the sets. As for the trailer, fans will have to wait a bit longer, as it's likely not due until at least next month.
