FX has released new promotional footage for Y: The Last Man, indicating that the show is finally making active progress. Based on Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra's eponymous comic book series that released 10 volumes during its six-year publication period between 2002 and 2008, Y: The Last Man follows its titular hero, Yorick, as he, along with his pet monkey, emerges as the only survivor in a cataclysmic androcide that wipes out every cisgendered male mammal from existence. In the show, Yorick must adapt to the struggles of his new life, whilst making efforts to restore what was lost and create a better world.

Y: The Last Man has arguably endured a lengthy, volatile period in development hell. FX first explored the series in 2015, but it wasn't until 2018 that a pilot was ordered for the show. In 2019, FX handed out a series order to Y: The Last Man, with Aïda Mashaka Croal and Michael Green attached as showrunners. But shortly after the show was greenlit, Green and Croal exited the project citing creative differences. Eliza Clark was then brought on board as the new showrunner. But the troubles for the show were far from over. In February 2020, the show hit snags yet again after its original lead Barry Keoghan left the show. Ben Schnetzer was then quickly introduced as his replacement, and it finally appeared as if the show had assembled every piece in the puzzle. However, in March, Covid-19 struck, forcing the show to pause production until 2021. Now, the show is back on track, and it has even offered a sneak-peek into what is coming fans' way.

FX dropped a video promoting its FX on Hulu initiative, and it included brief footage from Y: The Last Man. Although the spot cut out quickly within a few seconds, it did offer a glimpse at the apocalyptic event that sets up the series. There were bombs dropping, planes crashing, and men dropping dead on the streets. The footage also featured Yorick’s mother and congresswoman Jennifer Brown (Diane Lane) running to her safety. Yorick’s sister Hero Brown (Olivia Thirlby), too, made an appearance in the clip. She stood appalled, unsure of what to do next. Catch the first look of Y: The Last Man after the :24 second mark in the video below.

Nonetheless, there were several characters not shown in the teaser, including Agent 355 (Ashley Romans),  Dr. Allison Mann (Diana Bang), Beth DeVille (Juliana Canfield), Nora Brady ( Marin Ireland), Kimberly Cunningham (Amber Tamblyn), Sam Jordan (Elliot Fletcher), and the US president (Paul Gross). Another thing of note as obtained from the video is that although Y: The Last Man was initially commissioned for FX's linear cable network, the show moved to FX on Hulu, a dedicated streaming hub for FX Networks, in June 2020. Interestingly Y: The Last Man, isn't the service's only offering, as it also includes Ryan Murphy's AHS spinoff American Horror Stories and Taika Waititi's Reservation Dogs on its slate of upcoming shows.

Although brief, the new footage is hope-inspiring evidence that after being in development for several years, Y: The Last Man is finally gearing up to see the light of the day. The quick scenes from the video also showcase that the adaptation is steering its plot close to its comic origins. The characterization of Lane's Diane and Thirlby's Brown is quite authentic and so is the show's depiction of the earth-shattering event that sets the narrative into motion. Hopefully, fans and viewers will find out more about the show in the coming days. After years of anticipation, Y: The Last Man has finally unveiled its first look, so it's safe to say that the day is not far away when fans will have a premiere date for the show as well.
