Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition, Monolith Soft's most recent entry in their epic and interconnected sci-fi series, has a lot going on. Plenty of quieter moments for character building are spread throughout the massive story, but the complicated combat-system is where the game really separates itself from most other JRPGs. It might take some time to get a handle on all the stats and intricacies, but once it clicks, combat encounters can feel as smooth and hypnotic as a rhythm game.

And then comes Xord. Also known as "Mysterious Face," Xord is one of the several Faced Mechon bosses Shulk and his pals will have to...face. When first encountered in the Ether Mine, he presents a bit of a puzzle, barely taking any normal damage or even damage from Shulk's magical sword, the Monado. This guide will explain the trick to take take down Xord the first time you come across him.

It doesn't take long to realize that defeating Xord is going to be a bit more complicated than usual. The player is going to have to follow the standard strategy of Breaking and Toppling, but Xord is resistant to the typical Break attack. The only way to actually Topple Xord is to do so through a Chain Attack, which requires the Party Gauge (located in the upper left corner of the screen, as seen in the above image) to be full.

To get the Party Gauge to fill, simply go about the battle as usual. Press B when prompted to increase the party's Tension level, which will in turn help the Party Gauge to fill faster. As the battle progresses, kill the Mechon minions that Xord summons to further fill the Party Gauge. Don't forget to have Shulk cast Enchant so the whole party can take out the little guys. Keep at this until the Party Gauge is full and then get ready for a Chain Attack.

Before unleashing the Chain Attack, make sure the party is arranged in an order so that the first character to go can do a Break attack and the next character can do a Topple attack. This is the only way to get Xord off his metal legs and start doing some real damage to him.

The player might need to repeat this process a couple of times depending on how much damage is dished out while he's vulnerable but will only need to shave off around a quarter of Xord's health for a cut-scene to trigger and the boss fight to finish. Follow these steps to execute a Chain Attack properly and lay into him with your strongest attacks when you can. He'll be bested in no time!
