Warning: contains mild spoilers for X-Factor #8!

The X-Men’s lives are about to become a horror film as they prepare to take on the Goddess of Death in X-Factor #8. The X-Men's nation of Krakoa recently cracked the secret to conquering death, allowing them to resurrect Krakoan citizens through a combination of mutant powers. Sadly, this new process - which almost killed the embodiment of Death itself - seems to have attracted the ire of terrifying goddess the Morrigan.

X-Factor recently became the mutant race's experts on death, being the team who verify mutants are deceased so they can be resurrected, since Krakoan law strictly forbids duplicates. If that wasn't enough, team member Prodigy also started a body farm in the team's Boneyard base, making it a creepy locale even before the Morrigan turned up. Sadly, a recent investigation into the repeated deaths of Siryn revealed she was possessed by the death goddess, who now has it out for the team, turning their headquarters into a mutant horror movie.

A sneak preview of X-Factor #8 by Leah Williams and David Baldeon shows that the X-Men's CSI team definitely aren't ready for what they're about to face. The action starts with Rachel Grey's adorable Warwolf pup doing the first thing any animal does in a horror film: barking at nothing. Annoyed, Rachel decides to take the pup outside, only to find the young mutant Eyeboy standing in the middle of an empty room and staring eerily at the ceiling, clearly spooked by whatever he is seeing. While he gives no hints to Rachel that anything is wrong, he does ask to keep her pet in his own room. The preview closes with both mutant boy and alien pet looking up at the creepy, slithering, oozing things that only they can see.

Last issue already revealed in a flashforward that the team will be trapped in their haunted base, hunted by the Goddess of Death, and that process is clearly beginning here. The Morrigan has already shown herself to be a terrifying foe, handily defeating Wolverine's son Daken and using Siryn's powers to force X-Factor to sabotage their own investigation. Now, it seems she's ready to reveal herself, bringing a pretty understandable grudge to where the X-Men live.

The X-Men's conquering of death solved a lot of their old problems, but it also upgraded the entire mutant race to a new level of threat. The Morrigan is a dangerous foe even in a world where dead mutants can be resurrected, and while Eyeboy and Rachel's Warwolf are capable of spotting her influence, they're nowhere near powerful enough to fight back. Hopefully X-Factor can come up with a plan to escape their horrific fate when X-Factor #8 hits stores March 10, but even if they do, it seems likely some of the X-Men team will suffer fates right out of a horror movie before then.
