After all these years, the X-Men's Wolverine and Jean Grey are officially an item. The near-romance between Wolverine and Jean has been a constant fixture of X-Men comics since the Phoenix Saga, but the two have never officially hooked up. Jean finally decided to succumb to temptation in the Morrison era, but ironically Logan turned her down, having realized they wouldn't work out. Now thanks to X-Force, things have changed.

Jonathan Hickman's X-Men relaunch has seen the entire mutant race gather on the living island of Krakoa. The mutants are building a new society, abandoning conventional human norms, and there's been some evidence this involves their embracing polyamory. Given one of Krakoa's new laws is to "make new mutants," it's safe to say the X-Men are getting busy. The comics have strongly been hinting Cyclops, Jean Grey, and Wolverine are now in a polyamorous relationship, after years of being a love triangle; attentive readers were amused to note there are no doors between their bedrooms on the Moon. Still, up until now it's all been kept subtle - but X-Force writer Benjamin Percy promised some sexy X-Men surprises. Now, fans know he wasn't kidding.

Previous comics have confirmed Scott and Jean are still together, but this week's X-Force #10 goes one step further to reveal Jean is indeed spending a lot of quality time with Wolverine right now. The issue ends with Jean joining Logan in one of Krakoa's hot tubs. The conversation is intense, given Jean has just quit X-Force having learned just how immoral her colleague Beast has been. She takes a swig of beer and then climbs on Logan's lap, wrapping her arms around him. "If you think I'm too good for X-Force, you probably think I'm too good for you," Jean tells him. "Well... sure," Logan replies. "But you need a taste of poison now and then. Just to keep things balanced." The issue ends there with a final panel of Jean and Logan, and it's pretty clear what's going to happen next.

Jean Grey Wolverine

It seems the will-they/won't-they relationship between Wolverine and Jean Grey has finally gotten serious on the island of Krakoa, where human norms such as marriage have been discounted. To be fair, there's a strong argument the institution of marriage doesn't really work in comics, where "Till death do us part" can refer to a span of weeks and resurrections are a dime a dozen. Both Jean and her husband Cyclops have died and been resurrected several times since their marriage in 1994's X-Men #30.

For all that's the case, though, there's no reason to assume Logan and Jean are a healthy couple. Fans have long romanticized Wolverine's infatuation with Jean, but it's always seemed more than a little predatory, with Logan refusing to take no for an answer. He was probably right to turn Jean down in the Morrison era, and it's a little sad to see him go back to his old obsession. There's no reason to assume this polyamorous X-Force romance is going to turn out well.
