Warning! Spoilers ahead for Way of X #5

In the latest issue of Marvel Comics' Way of X, the X-Men's Nightcrawler discovers how to save the mutant nation of Krakoa, though a dark twist makes said discovery incredibly tragic. While recent issues have seen Nightcrawler working with Legion to uncover the root of corruption affecting all of mutantkind, Kurt Wagner has also been looking to create a better path for mutants to follow. He's grown increasingly concerned with the problematic cultures and traditions that have been formed on Krakoa, an island of powered individuals who can be resurrected at will. Meanwhile, the X-Men villain Onslaught has found the cracks in the supposed paradise, and he's working to resist Nightcrawler and Legion's attempts to curb his influence.

In Way of X from Si Spurrier and Bob Quinn, the presence of Onslaught has been discovered by Legion, and he's been working with Kurt to stop him. Legion has learned that Onslaught's been gaining power from the gaps of time lost between a mutant's death and their last mental backup saved in Xavier's Cerebro, which are used for Krakoa's mutant resurrections. While Nightcrawler was trying to resolve a bitter rivalry between the morally bankrupt Fabian Cortez and the gravity manipulating mutant known as Lost in Way of X #5, Onslaught intervened. Corrupting Cortez's mind, Onslaught had him boost the powers of Lost so much that her powers pulled Mars' largest moon out of orbit and down to Arakko, threatening to destroy the recently terraformed mutant planet.

This immense threat motivated Nightcrawler to have Cortez boost his own teleporting powers to try and send the moon back into orbit on a suicide mission. However, the boost also gave Kurt a vision, allowing him to see the entirety of Krakoa's plight and corruption. He apparently discovered the way to save mutantkind, something which he called "The Spark," and instructed Cortez to remind Nightcrawler after his resurrection. However, Onslaught's power is seemingly too great as he's just thrown a tragic twist into Kurt's plan.

While Nightcrawler managed to save Planet Arakko and all of its new residents, his hopes for after his resurrection did not go as planned. Because of the gap of time between his sacrifice and his last backup, Kurt had no memory of his significant discovery. Furthermore, Fabian was found in a coma, which was most likely the work of Onslaught. As the last page shows so many mutants under Onslaught's influence, it really couldn't be a more tragic way to end the issue, especially considering the fact the Xavier decided that he wasn't going to prioritize a speedy resurrection for Cortez given his disruptive nature (and Nightcrawler had no reason or memory to object).

Now, the Onslaught Revelation is imminent, and it looks as though Kurt will have to discover "The Spark" that saves Krakoa all over again. Hopefully, Nightcrawler will be able to find a way to save the mutant nation by some other means before it's too late. If not, it's going to be even more tragic for readers who are now the only ones who know what might have been for Nightcrawler's war against Onslaught.
