Storm has laid claim to a lot of titles, ranging from African goddess to mutant leader. It's easy to forget to add one more title to that list: Queen of Wakanda. When Emma Frost and Jean Grey venture into Storm's mind in Giant-Sized X-Men: Jean Grey and Emma Frost #1, the pair discover several signs of Storm's past connection to Black Panther.

The issue finds Jean Grey and Emma Frost working together to save Storm after she starts suffering from a mysterious ailment. Entering Storm's mind, the pair find themselves in the sprawling Wakandan Ancestral Plains. During their journey, Jean Grey and Emma Frost also find two large and mysterious black lions, which also hints at her and Black Panther's past relationship.

The connection between T'Challa and Ororo has long been an element of the comics. The pair first met in Marvel Team-Up #100, though this was later the subject of a retcon. Ultimately, the couple was married during the height of the Civil War storyline, in Black Panther #18. While the two characters would remain husband and wife (and king and queen) for the next six years, it ultimately wouldn't last. The two found themselves on opposite sides of the Avengers vs. X-Men event, which saw Namor ravage Wakanda with his Atlantean army, leading T'Challa to end their marriage.

Black Panther and Storm.

Emma Frost and Jean Grey ultimately conclude that Storm is suffering from a virus courtesy of their enemies, the Children of the Vault. The two telepaths must find a way to stop the virus from spreading (or hatching, as it is depicted in Storm's mindscape). If they fail, Storm will die permanently, leaving Emma and Jean's rescue mission at its more precarious stage.

Still, with all the Wakandan symbolism throughout Storm's mind, it's possible Ororo's ultimate hope lies elsewhere.  While Black Panther and Storm remain divorced, they have been civil towards each other over the years, and there have been signs of time healing, or at least narrowing, the gap between them. Storm and Black Panther's first relationship signaled a rare show of unity during Civil War. Were they to reunite, their marriage could give a similar hope during a time when mutantkind and humankind have never been further from one another. This is all speculation though, and it seems unlikely Black Panther could save Storm from her impending fate from the Children of Vault. Still, it's not entirely impossible - if the minds of the king and one-time queen of Wakanda remain linked.
